Excerpt from Carleton Grange, Vol. 3: A Novel It is still the dead of night in Linchester, and the deserted thoroughfares lie hushed under the unpaled light of myriads of stars, when the private door of the house popularly known as "Walford's" is softly opened, and a man cautiously puts out his head; looking first up, then down, the street. No sign or sound of life is there, and after an instant's pause he comes forth, closing the door gently behind him. On first finding himself in the open air he makes two or three uncertain, almost staggering, steps, as one whose brain is giddy and confused, but recovers immediately, and sets off at a quick walk down the street in the direction of the railway station. A gas-lamp is burning a little further on; as he draws near, the rays fall upon his face, and show the pale features to be those of Francis Godfrey. Excerpt from Carleton Grange, Vol. 2 of 3: A Novel It was a pleasant retreat, Maud's favourite summer-house, nestling among the trees and shrubs of a little knoll overlooking the river, and covered with jasmine and honeysuckle that hung in long fringes over the tiny lattice-window and low doorway. And never had it seemed to Maud more bright and attractive than when she sought it on the evening of the day which, as she hoped, would be the last of Francis Godfrey's stay in Hernebridge.
