Many schools are ill-prepared to keep students and staff safe in most types of emergencies. While schools have procedures to follow, most students and staff do not have knowledge of how to prevent school violence or what to do, or where to go when an event happens. Current school policies don’t always have pro-active plans in place and administrators have to react after an incident happens instead of being pro-active to prevent the incident. According to the U.S. department of Homeland Security and FEMA (2010) ?Families and communities expect schools to keep their children and youths safe from threats (human-caused emergencies such as crime and violence) and hazards (natural disasters, disease outbreaks, and accidents)?. In collaboration with their local government and community partners, schools can take steps to plan for potential emergencies. A pro-active approach by administrators and staff, combined with education students about school violence and how to handle situations with help prevent many incidents of school violence. There are many statistics about school violence and how it could have been prevented if the school had a pro-active safety plan in place before the incident occurred. Schools with a positive learning environment are less likely to have violence incidents occur in their school (Center for Disease Control, 2015). This project seeks to create an outline for pro-active school safety plan that will help identify issues in the school before an incident occurs and train students and staff what to do in case of an emergency.

This book shares some ideas on how to make school environments safer.” —Michael Kehoe, Chief of Police, Newtown, Connecticut "While we continue to work on building a safer and more aware society, this kind of book is important.
