Excerpt from Cape Cod, Vol. 1 of 2 Cape Cod is the bared and bended arm of Massachusetts the shoulder is at Buzzard' 3 Bay; the elbow, or crazy-bone, at Cape Malle barre; the wrist at Truro; and the sandy fist at Provincetown, behind which the State stands on her guard, with her back to the Green Mountains, and her feet planted on the floor of the ocean, like an athlete protecting her Bay, boxing with northeast storms, and, ever and anon, heaving up her Atlantic adversary from the lap of earth, ready to thrust forward her other fist, which keeps guard the while upon her breast at Cape Ann. On studying the map, I saw that there must be an uninterrupted beach on the east or outside of the forearm of the Cape, more than thirty miles from the general line of the coast, which would afford a good sea view, but that, on ao count of an opening in the beach, forming the entrance to Nauset Harbor, in Orleans, I must strike it in Eastham, if I approached it by land, and probably I could walk thence straight to Race Point, about twenty-eight miles, and not meet with any obstruction. Excerpt from Cape Cod, Vol. 2 of 2 Of birds not found in the interior of the State, - at least in my neighborhood, I heard, in the summer, -the Black-throated Bunt ing (fringilla Americana) amid the shrub bery, and in the open land the Upland Plover (tetanus Bartramias), whose quivering notes were ever and anon prolonged into a clear, somewhat plaintive, yet hawk like scream, which sounded at a very indefinite distance. The bird may have been in the next field, though it sounded a mile off. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Old Cape Cod: The Land: The Men the Sea But perhaps the ultimate charm of the Cape is that, like a child, it is small enough to be loved. For the native-born, returning here in middle age, there is the delight of coming back to little things that memory had held as stupendous: a dim foreign township that used to be reached in a day's journey with carry all and pair is only five miles distant by the Lower Road; the Great Square proves to be within the swing of an hour's stroll; the a modest mid-vic torian mansion with library and drawing - room that had the remembered vista of Versailles. Yet, in their degree, this charm is free to the stranger. The Cape has a whimsical and endearing smallness: its greatest amplitude can boast but a few miles; and the most tortuous wood road that promised a day's excursion through an uncharted wilderness will soon show you, from some gentle eminence, the true north to be reckoned by the curve of the bay. Excerpt from Cape Cod and the Old Colony The author made his first and long deferred visit to Cape Cod in the summer of 1915. There on the highlands of T ruro, with their superb air, marvelous views and the freedom of untrammeled nature, the Cape cast its spell upon him. Fugitive excursions on the upper parts of the great foreland revealed to him its variety of beauty and its significant history sent him to libraries where loving annalists had written what they knew and felt ab out the land of their fathers. Excerpt from Cape Cod and All Along Shore Stories: Stories The stories collected in this volume have been printed at different times in Hamer's Magazine, except one which appeared in the Atlantic Monthly. Collections of stories like this, I have noticed, are commonly pub lished at the earnest solicitation of friends, or to gratify the desires of an amiable but undiscriminating public. To prevent misunderstanding in the present case, it is perhaps well to say. That the public is guiltless in respect to this volume, and that no fond friend has ever expressed even a willingness to have my stories assume this more enduring form - except the publishers, who, it will be readily believed, have no especial desire to see the book permanently on their shelves. I have noticed that it is customary with writers, when they collect their shorter tales, to set them into one gen eral story, which serves as a frame-work to the smallpieces, and furnishes a name for the volume, such as the Queen of Hearts of Mr. Wilkie Collins, and Miss Edwards's Miss Carew. In this way a story writer gives his collection the appearance, at first sight, of what is call ed a novel. It naturally occurred to me to follow this fash ion, which has the advantage of deceiving purchasers, who buy what they imagine from the title and chapter heads to be a novel, and do not discover, until they get home, that what they took to be a fat chicken is only a small basket full of stale eggs. Buti refrained, for two reasons: lst., I think it wrong to practice such a-cheat upon an unofl'ending and confiding public; and, 2d1y., I tried in vain to invent a tale which should serve me as.
