Excerpt from California and Alaska, and Over the Canadian Pacific Railway In accordance with a time-honored custom, I must, at the outset, explain in a few words why this work is given to the public. In the winter of 1888-9, I determined upon taking a trip with my family across the continent to the Pacific coast, and from thence to the city of Mexico. A few friends were invited to accompany us on our journey. The intention was to be absent about three months and a half, and the 1st of March, 1889, was agreed upon as the starting-day. But the severe illness of my daughter, which began but a few days prior to our time for leaving, disarranged all our plans, and the day of departure was postponed until the first week in April. The more I thought of this proposed journey, the more interesting and important it seemed to me in the prospective.
