Excerpt from Calendar of Home Office Papers of the Reign of George III., 1766-1769, Preserved in Her Majesty's Public Record Office In a second long letter of the same date he sent three lists to show how the members voted, that the King might know how many of his principal servants, and those peculiarly indebted to his goodness, had ventured to sup port the interest and ambition of a few individuals. His Excellency says he is more than ever of opinion that the absolute disposal of the several offices of the revenue, subject to the control of the Treasury in England, should be placed in his hands. He is the more confirmed in that opinion from the great weight some of the Commissioners have been. Able to exert over several members who are officers under them. Asks if there are not some in the different branches of the services who ought to be marked out as particular objects of His Majesty's displeasure. On the other hand, there are men of the first abilities, integrity, and property, who have supported the Govern ment, who can be recommended to His Majesty as servants to carry on the public business with safety and credit.
