The guide all MBAs and exec ed students need. If you're enrolled in an MBA or executive education program, you've probably encountered a powerful learning tool: the business case. But if you're like many people, you may find interpreting and writing about cases mystifying and time-consuming. In The Case Study Handbook, Revised Edition, William Ellet presents a potent new approach for efficiently analyzing, discussing, and writing about cases. Early chapters show how to classify cases according to the analytical task they require (making a decision, performing an evaluation, or diagnosing a problem) and quickly establish a base of knowledge about a case. Strategies and templates, in addition to several sample Harvard Business School cases, help you apply the author's framework. Later in the book, Ellet shows how to write persuasive case-analytical essays based on the process laid out earlier. Examples of effective writing further reinforce the methods. The book also includes a chapter on how to talk about cases more effectively in class. Any current or prospective MBA or executive education student needs this guide.

Becoming a Certified Association Executive (CAE) shows your commitment to the association profession. To earn the CAE title you need to first submit an application and prove to ASAE that you have met the experience and education eligibility requirements. Then you may apply to sit for the multiple choice based exam. The CAE exam is offered in a single 4-hour session, given twice a year (in May and December) at scheduled test centers throughout the U.S. The exam uses a pass-fail cut-off mechanism determined through a criterion-referenced method. This guide provides you with the study material necessary for passing the CAE exam. Quite many questions are, in my opinion, written subjectively. You can get tripped up easily if you do not pay attention to the way the questions are worded. For example, the questions below are asking for different answers even though they look highly alike: What could be the issue here? What could be done to BEST address the issue here? What has to be done FIRST in order to address the issue here? What could have been done to avoid the issue here? There are also hard facts based questions that are bound to be objective - such as those related to laws and regulations at the federal level (yes, the federal level, NOT the state level - state laws are mostly irrelevant in the exam). These questions primarily test your memorization skills. In any case, when you answer the CAE exam questions you have to take the point of view of a Chief Staff Executive or a Chief Elected Officer unless otherwise specified. I personally think the Principles of Association Management book published by the ASAE and the Chamber of Commerce (1975) is excellent - it covers many of the essential topics that you need to know to tackle the exam questions, but the problem is that it was written in 1975, that many of the information has yet to receive the deserved update. That is why we came up with this special study guide package.

The new 2015 CAE exam blueprint is released. This book covers the new blueprint, which has become effective in May 2015. You can think of this new blueprint as a major reorganization of the knowledge domains. The new blueprint has topics classified under these major domains: Strategic Management Governance and Structure Membership Development Programs, Products, and Services Leadership Administration Knowledge Management & Research Public Policy, Government Relations, and Coalition Building Marketing, Public Relations, & Communications Some questions are quite subjective. You want to be very careful with those concerning governance, management and leadership. The chief staff executive (CSE) is a paid position which requires one to play a vital role in minimizing the risks and obstacles involved in running an association. When you answer the exam questions you take the point of view of a CSE unless otherwise specified. An association executive has to provide guidance and leadership to the board of directors. He/she has to implement decisions made by the board and oversee the "day to day" operations within the parameters established by the board of directors. He/she must follow the guidelines of all federal & state laws, community documents and board direction, and must maintain a successful and long-lasting working relationship with the board and other members of the association. Know the ASAE code of ethics. Download the latest version from the ASAE web site. You need to be able to tell what is right and what is wrong.

Bestselling author Alain de Botton considers how our private homes and public edifices influence how we feel, and how we could build dwellings in which we would stand a better chance of happiness. In this witty, erudite look at how we shape, and are shaped by, our surroundings, Alain de Botton applies Stendhal’s motto that “Beauty is the promise of happiness” to the spaces we inhabit daily. Why should we pay attention to what architecture has to say to us? de Botton asks provocatively. With his trademark lucidity and humour, de Botton traces how human needs and desires have been served by styles of architecture, from stately Classical to minimalist Modern, arguing that the stylistic choices of a society can represent both its cherished ideals and the qualities it desperately lacks. On an individual level, de Botton has deep sympathy for our need to see our selves reflected in our surroundings; he demonstrates with great wisdom how buildings — just like friends — can serve as guardians of our identity. Worrying about the shape of our sofa or the colour of our walls might seem self-indulgent, but de Botton considers the hopes and fears we have for our homes at a new level of depth and insight. When shopping for furniture or remodelling the kitchen, we don’t just consider functionality but also the major questions of aesthetics and the philosophy of art: What is beauty? Can beautiful surroundings make us good? Can beauty bring happiness? The buildings we find beautiful, de Botton concludes, are those that represent our ideas of a meaningful life. The Architecture of Happiness marks a return to what Alain does best — taking on a subject whose allure is at once tantalizing and a little forbidding and offering to readers a completely beguiling and original exploration of the subject. As he did with Proust, philosophy, and travel, now he does with architecture.
