Relocation or development of local production: what are the competitive advantages of advanced economies, the sectors to focus on and the skills needed to achieve these goals? How can we identify the enterprises likely to succeed in the challenge of internationalization and make a useful contribution to the development of exports? Are deindustrialized regions condemned to confine their activities to the role of suppliers of low-cost, high-quality technological innovations, transformed by foreign firms into industrial innovations that will return to them in the form of imports? The author argues that reindustrialization through entrepreneurial innovation is crucial. He postulates that the large-scale deindustrialization of advanced economics largely explains their low R&D spending. And that the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship implies risk-taking and the social acceptance of error as a normal part of the learning process. Research and innovation policy must therefore be geared towards reindustrialization, in particular by fostering research and technology transfer partnerships, and by setting conditions for localization when a company benefits from public investment and local patents. In order to adopt a global and coherent innovation strategy, it is necessary to rely on the territorial ecosystems piloted by the regions, to favor a holistic approach combining upstream project support schemes with the ability to support the downstream industrialization phases, to coordinate local strategies with public innovation support schemes, and to set up agile and tightly-knit governing bodies, capable of executing short-circuit decisions based on regular assessment of the economic impact of supported projects and on ongoing strategic and forward-looking monitoring.

The innovation engine that powered the U.S. economy to unmatched prosperity over the last century is now failing, threatening the way we work and live. As the nation spins its wheels--reeling from the job losses of the recession and seemingly unable to generate the breakthroughs needed to propel alternative energy, medicine, and other critical fields--Europe and especially Asia have begun to capture the leadership of crucial new technology sectors. How can America revitalize its innovation leadership and kick-start the economy again? In Great Again, veteran high-tech CEO Henry Nothhaft takes us inside the heart of America's innovation community to surface a new proposal for the job creation and economic growth we need. Bringing to life the human drama of the exhilarating, demanding and often frustrating startup environment, Nothhaft offers this complex world as the setting for a promising solution to the country's current standstill. Nothhaft, with journalist David Kline, says a breakthrough can be achieved through a series of practical and achievable tax, regulatory and other reforms that would help strengthen entrepreneurial startup businesses--and offer the necessary fuel for an American resurgence. They key is to bolster the segment and lessen the startup's struggle against a perfect storm of "red tape" burdens. In fact, this entrepreneurial ecosystem may be the only force in society that can create revolutionary innovations that would lead to new industries and millions of new jobs--generating prosperity again for all citizens. Great Again provides fresh research and original analysis to offer an entirely new lens for recovery. Filled with evocative stories and surprising evidence of the crucial role of the innovative force in society, the book presents an action plan that both entrepreneurs and policymakers can rally behind.

The COVID-19 pandemic is causing a radical change in both the economic and business paradigms that have ruled countries for decades. Emerging models are leading to a new world economic order predictably led by China and the United States. New forms of organization, new ways of working remotely, the strengthening of some industries to the detriment of others, and the supremacy of technology to be able to work are going to change the economies as we know them today. The Handbook of Research on Emerging Business Models and the New World Economic Order offers strategies, economic policies, social, economic, and political trends that will affect organizations to increase their efficiency and labor productivity and change the world’s business and financial structures. This book forecasts future business changes and prospective models, structural or not, for guiding the survival of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), multinationals, family firms, entrepreneurs, and NGOs in the post-COVID-19 era. Covering topics such as business model creation, global sustainable logistics 4.0, and social and solidarity economy, this text is essential for economists, entrepreneurs, managers, executives, family firms, SMEs, business professionals, policymakers, students, researchers, practitioners, and academicians.
