Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, 1927, Vol. 43: In Two Parts-Part I The field work that resulted in the present report was begun in 1912 when Lewis Radcliffe and the late William W. Welsh undertook a study of the anadromous clupeoids principally on the Potomac River and at the head of Chesapeake Bay. These studies were continued more or less intermittently until the winter of 1914 - 15, when the Fisheries steamer Fish Hawk was assigned to this work and the scope was enlarged to include a general biological and physical examination of Chesapeake Bay. This work, which was then under the supervision of Lewis Radcliffe, was interrupted by the World War. It was resumed in 1920 under the immediate supervision of Dr. R. P. Cowles, of Johns Hopkins University. In 1921 the general survey was supplemented by a special investigation of the fishes of Chesapeake Bay by the authors of the present report and was continued at intervals until the fall of 1922, when all the field operations pertaining to the Chesapeake Bay investigations were brought to a close.
