Marcello Cossu L'Abbate was born in Rome in 1934. Between 1942 and 1946 he drew his family life in Rome. When the 50th anniversary of the end of the war was celebrated, he published "L'Immagine e L'Immaginario" ("The Image and the Imagery"), a book that includes some of these drawings, his memories, comments and the circumstances accompanying them. Here we can conjecture the ways of apprehending the policies of silencing and extermination that were taking place within the sociopolitical framework of the time, and in the family climate of commitment to the suffering of citizens deported, shot and disappeared. "L'Immagine e L'Immaginario" is a valuable testimony to the life of Marcello and his contemporaries during World War II. It is a re-actualization of those experiences and a lively reflection about them, which gives rise to new forms of historical and personal understanding. It is a retrospective elaboration. It is not the mere story of an experience that is performed by an eyewitness. In the drawings and comments there is an interpretation of facts that brings us closer to the understanding of social phenomena.

The study of ancient architecture reveals much about the social constructs and culture of the architects, builders, and inhabitants of the structures, but few studies bridge the gap between architecture and archaeology. This comprehensive examination of sites in the Ohio Valley, going as far north as Ontario, integrates structural engineering and wood science technology into the toolkit of archaeologists. Presenting the most current research on structures from pre-European contact, Building the Past allows archaeologists to expand their interpretations from simply describing postmold patterns to more fully envisioning the complex architecture of critical locations like Hopewell, Moorehead Circle, and Brown’s Bottom.

Annotation "A highly original study that is of particular importance as communities across the United States and elsewhere explore heritage tourism as a way to boost local economies, Sally J. Southwick's book Building on a Borrowed Past: Place and Identity in Pipestone, Minnesota demonstrates how small-town citizens and boosters contributed to the generic image of "the Indian" in American culture and describes the process of one culture absorbing the heritage of another for civic advantage."--BOOK JACKET. How did a kremlin, a fortified monastery or a wooden church in Russia become part of the heritage of the entire world? Corinne Geering traces the development of international cooperation in conservation since the 1960s, highlighting the role of experts and sites from the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation in UNESCO and ICOMOS. Despite the ideological divide, the notion of world heritage gained momentum in the decades following World War II. Divergent interests at the local, national and international levels had to be negotiated when shaping the Soviet and Russian cultural heritage displayed to the world. The socialist discourse of world heritage was re-evaluated during perestroika and re-integrated as UNESCO World Heritage in a new state and international order in the 1990s.

Under the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991, historic preservation and highway communities have opportunities, such as the funding for Transportation Enhancement Activities, to reaffirm existing partnerships and establish new ones. The National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Federal Highway Administration prepared this booklet to describe some of the Transportation Enhancement projects. These projects demonstrate that historic preservation is not only rewarding on its own terms; investment in historic preservation can also help revitalize a neighborhood, rebuild a community, and stimulate economic growth.

Although science has unlocked the secrets of the human genome, the causes of social and economic development remain stubbornly enigmatic. Why do some countries adopt new technologies more readily than others? Why does income inequality persist in some regions--even in the face of rapid economic growth? Why do some societies welcome the challenges of globalization while others attempt to turn back the tide? Honoring the Past, Building the Future examines these and many related questions through the experience of Latin America and the Caribbean. In an accessible, journalistic style, author Ricardo Ávila explores a tumultuous half-century in which the region went from backwater to breadbasket, from dictatorship to democracy, and from economic basket case to emerging power.
