The Buddha's path to human transformation declares women and men equally capable of spiritual realization, yet throughout history most exemplars of this tradition have been men. Now, as Buddhism is transmitted to the West, women are playing a major role in its adaptation and development. The conversation presented here takes place among experienced practitioners from many Buddhist traditions who share their thoughts on the Buddhist outlook, its practical application in everyday life, and the challenges of practicing Buddhism in the Western world. Thirteen women contribute a wealth of thought-provoking material on topics such as bringing Dharma into relationships, dealing with stress, Buddhism and the Twelve Steps, mothering and meditation, the monastic experience, and forging a kind heart in an age of alienation.

Explores the exemplary legacy of Buddhist women across the centuries and across the Buddhist world. Eminent Buddhist Women reveals the exemplary legacy of Buddhist women through the centuries. Despite the Buddhas own egalitarian values, Buddhism as a religion has been dominated by men for more than two thousand years. With few exceptions, the achievements of Buddhist women have remained hidden or ignored. The narratives in this book call into question the criteria for eminence in the Buddhist tradition and how these criteria are constructed and controlled. Each chapter pays a long-overdue tribute to one woman or a group of women from across the Buddhist world, including the West. Using a variety of sources, from orally transmitted legends to firsthand ethnographic research, contributors examine the key issues women face in their practice of Buddhist ethics, contemplation, and social action. What emerges are Buddhist principles that transcend gender: loving kindness, compassion, wisdom, spiritual attainment, and liberation. In her chapter What Is a Relevant Role Model? Rita Gross describes the need for more stories about Buddhist women, particularly those whose feats are not so fabled as to seem out of reach for contemporary practitioners. This volume advances that objective, mapping the paths of numerous, often lesser-known women who have dedicated their lives to Buddhism and inspired their communities. Buddhadharma Educational and inspirational, this important collection will appeal to scholars and practitioners alike. Lady of Realisation is one of the first memoirs of Tibetan Buddhist nun and western teacher Sister Karma Khechog Palmo. The book provides memorable insights of the sixteenth Karmapa and other teachers of the Kagyu tradition in the 1970s. Sister Palmos life as an Englishwoman in India was extraordinary both as an academic, political activist, and social worker. She is remembered as one of the key figures in bringing the sixteenth Karmapa to the West. She influenced younger important teachers like Trungpa Rinpoche and Akong Rinpoche. It was my privilege to have been her student, and to study and travel with her. This memoir is a reflection of that extraordinary time of the arrival of Tibetan Buddhism in the West in the 1970s. The memoir brings with it deep, personal experiences from my own life, lived out during the brutal years of the apartheid government in South Africa. The life and work of Sister Palmo continues to inspire others on the path. She brought the ancient yogic tradition of the woman yogis of the past together with insights into contemporary life. Her invaluable teachings open a door into the practice of Buddhism in our everyday journey.
