The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume series, encompasses the seven non-Christian religions of Asia: Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, and Islam. Translated into English by authorities in their respective fields, these sacred texts have been edited by F. Max Muller and have profoundly influenced civilization. Buddhist Suttas (1881) translated by T.W. Rhys Davids, is volume XI of The Sacred Books of the East, a series available from Cosimo Classics. This book focuses on Buddhism and includes the Book of the Great Decease, similar to Christian Gospel, as well as truths and mysticism central to the Buddhist faith, a must-read for anyone interested in Buddhism.

The Digha Nikaya or the collection of long doctrinary lectures of the Buddha is one of the five Nikayas or collections belonging to the Suttapitaka or the basket of (Buddha`s) discourses which is one of the three majorr collections of Pali Buddhist texts, the other two being Vinayapitaka and Abhidhammapitaka. It consists of 34 long suttas of which each individual one treats intensively some particular point or points of the doctrine. The Buddha, like other Indian teachers of his time, taught by conversation. He followed the literary habit of his time by embodying his doctrine in set phrases, sutras, on which he enlarged on different occasiions in different ways. When the Buddha died these sayings (suttas) were collected together by his disciples into the great Nikayas of which the present one is the first.

Originally published in 1881, this translation of Buddhist texts introduces readers to the most important messages from the Buddha, including those discussing the Eighth Fold Path and the Four Noble Truths. Spiritual seekers, new Buddhists, and anyone interested in the philosophy of Buddhism will find these suttas an essential read. German author FRIEDRICH MAX MULLER (1823-1900) combined the studies of language, culture, and religion to create the discipline of comparative mythology. Among his many works are India: What Can It Teach Us? and Wisdom of the Buddha: The Unabridged Dhammapada.

On being asked to contribute a volume of translations from the Pli Suttas to the important series of which this work forms a part, the contributor has to face the difficulty of choosing from the stores of a nearly unknown literature--a difficulty arising from the embarrassment, not of poverty, but of wealth. I have endeavoured to make such a choice as would enable me to bring together into one volume a collection of texts which should be as complete a sample as one volume could afford of what the Buddhist scriptures, on the whole, contain. With this object in view I have refrained from confining myself to the most interesting books--those, namely, which deal with the Noble Eightfold Path, the most essential, the most original, and the most attractive part of Gotama's teaching; and I have chosen accordingly, besides the Sutta of the Foundation of the Kingdom of Righteousness (the Dhamma-kakka-ppavattana Sutta), which treats of the Noble Path, six others which treat of other sides of the Buddhist system; less interesting perhaps in their subject matter, but of no less historical value. This book is also available on Kindle.
