Developing a framework to study "what makes a region," Amitav Acharya investigates the origins and evolution of Southeast Asian regionalism and international relations. He views the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) "from the bottom up" as not only a U.S.-inspired ally in the Cold War struggle against communism but also an organization that reflects indigenous traditions. Buddhist Acharya Padmasambhava of the Vajrayana school of Mahayana sect, being invited by the king of Tibet, went there during the first half of the eighth century AD. He firmly established this esoteric form of Buddhism there and other Himalayan lands, which is known as “Lamaism”. He is deified and celebrated in Lamaism as Buddha himself, even more than that. As a direct result of Padmasambhava’s efforts, the people of Tibet were elevated to a state of unsurmountable spiritual culture. He is, therefore, truly one of the greatest of the world’s culture heroes. He is most revered and is honoured as the Second Buddha. He belongs to India and hails from Uddiyana. Therefore, he is popularly known as Uddiyana Guru. Padmasambhava originally belongs to Uddiyana, the location of this place has been disputed by some scholars to be in Swat Valley within the ancient Gandhara region, which is not tenable. In the contemporary world the meeting of Buddhism and Islam is most often imagined as one of violent confrontation. Indeed, the Taliban's destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in 2001 seemed not only to reenact the infamous Muslim destruction of Nalanda monastery in the thirteenth century but also to reaffirm the stereotypes of Buddhism as a peaceful, rational philosophy and Islam as an inherently violent and irrational religion. But if Buddhist-Muslim history was simply repeated instances of Muslim militants attacking representations of the Buddha, how had the Bamiyan Buddha statues survived thirteen hundred years of Muslim rule? Buddhism and Islam on the Silk Road demonstrates that the history of Buddhist-Muslim interaction is much richer and more complex than many assume. This groundbreaking book covers Inner Asia from the eighth century through the Mongol empire and to the end of the Qing dynasty in the late nineteenth century.
