This story takes place in a small city during summer vacation in 1963. Dyan's biggest worry for a thirteen year old is to make this summer a memorable one. Her best friends Jeanette and Dena will help her accomplish that. Dyan also meets three other girls and they all become a "family." Dyan loves the simple things that life brings her way. She is feisty, strong willed, caring, sensitive, and sometimes stubborn. One bad choice though will change everything. It will bring tragedy and heartache, too much for any young teenager to bear. If Dyan could relive that summer over again, she would. The girls will eventually learn that life is too short and that they should make every moment count. Dyan loves her family, her friends, and her life in general and when your thirteen years old nothing can go wrong or at least that's what Dyan thinks. This book may be for teen readers and older readers as well. It's a nostalgic view of the early 60's, a time when life was simple and happy. Readers that lived in the 1960's era hopefully this will bring back some fond memories. If I made one person smile while reading my book, then to me it is a success.

Runner-up for the John Glassco Literary Translation Prize This lesurely coming-of-age novel won Spain's Ateneo de Sevilla Award for Fiction in 1976. Set in the coastal city of San Sebastian during the summer of 1942, this evocative tale of a young boy trying to make sense of the adult world is beautifully written. Planicio's mother is dead and his father Pachi spends most of his time (and money) gambling. Father and son are often hungry. When Pachi is offered a job taking Don Ramon, a dying invalid, for walks in his wheelchair, Planicio grows to love this man, the first adult to really pay attention to him since his mother died. Their relationship is quite moving and a real highlight of the novel.

The first book of The Twelve Houses, Mystic & Rider, was hailed as “spellbinding” (Publishers Weekly), and introduced readers to the troubled land of Gillengaria. Now, national bestselling and award-winning author Sharon Shinn continues her epic tale, as a beautiful shapeshifter finds that intrigue and danger can be found even in the safest of havens… After joining an unlikely band of soldiers and sorcerers to rescue the regent Romar Brendan from a cabal of rebellious minor lords, the shiftling Kirra returns to her home of Danalustrous—and learns that her half-sister, Casserah, has been proclaimed heir to the land. Though Casserah is obligated to attend a circuit of social events held by the great Houses of Gillengaria, she obstinately refuses to go. So Kirra shapeshifts into her sister’s form and makes the rounds for her. In the royal city of Ghosenhall, she unexpectedly joins up with her steadfast compatriots from her previous adventures, and together they embark on a tour of the Twelve Houses acting as guardians for the enigmatic queen of Gillengaria and her alluring daughter. The motley group of mystics and warriors faces many dangers in their travels. But Kirra places herself willingly in peril when she falls in love with the irresistible—but already married—Lord Romar. Revealing her true identity to him, Kirra begins a tempestuous affair that places them both in mortal danger, and leads them both into the stronghold of the devious lords of the Thirteenth House…

A #1 New York Times bestseller, The Thirteenth Tale is part contemporary, part historical with mysterious threads about family secrets and the magic of books and storytelling weaving the two together. All children mythologize their birth . . . So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's collection of stories, which are as famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale as they are for the delight and enchantment of the twelve that do exist. The enigmatic Winter has spent six decades creating various outlandish histories for herself. Now old and ailing, she at last wants to tell the truth about her extraordinary past. She summons biographer Margaret Lea, a young woman who is struck by a very curious parallel between Winter's life and her own. As Vida exposes the history she meant to bury for good, Margaret is mesmerized. It is a tale of gothic strangeness, of a remote estate, feral children, a governess, a ghost, and a devastating fire. In this love letter to reading, Diane Setterfield will keep you guessing, make you wonder, move you to tears and laughter and, in the end, deposit you breathless yet satisfied back upon the shore of your everyday world.
