Excerpt from The Story of a Confederate Boy in the Civil War Some twenty-eight years ago I wrote and published a small book recounting my personal experiences in the Civil War, but this book is long out of print, and the publication exhausted. At the urgent request of some of my old comrades who still survive, and of friends and my own family, I have undertaken the task of rewriting and publishing this story. As stated in the preface to the former volume, the principal object of this work is to record, largely from memory, and after the lapse of many years (now nearly half a century) since the termination of the war between the states of the Federal Union, the history, conduct, character and deeds of the men who composed Company D, Seventh regiment of Virginia infantry, and the part they bore in that memorable conflict. The chief motive which inspires this undertaking is to give some meager idea of the Confederate soldier in the ranks, and of his individual deeds of heroism, particularly of that patriotic, self-sacrificing, brave company of men with whose fortunes and destiny my own were linked for four long years of blood and carnage, and to whom during that period I was bound by ties stronger than hooks of steel; whose confidence and friendship I fully shared, and as fully reciprocated. Excerpt from The Southern Soldier Boy: A Thousand Shots for the Confederacy The 26th of April, 1607, is the date that will linger in his tory after many a dreary record of battle and coronation has been swept away. For on that date the first permanent col ony of English speech made its landing on the soil of North America. It is fitting that the three hundredth anniversary of this event should be marked by the opening of the J ames town Exposition. The moral fiber which bound the South together was very deeply entrenched within the boy soldiers. Account after account reveals the distinguishing acts of grandeur performed on the battlefield by the so-called "Boy Soldiers." These acts of heroism were not planned acts of warfare but simply spontaneous reactions to the call of duty. Many incidents revealed the disciplined nature of these young boys when their ranks were broken by enemy fire. These young men never faltered during fire, but upon some occasions marched backwards while firing at the enemy and seeking a greater military position.

This moving memoir recounts the experiences of young boys who served in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Hull, herself the mother of a boy who fought and died for the Confederacy, provides a detailed account of their training, battles, and daily lives. Excerpt from Recollections of Thomas D. Duncan: A Confederate Soldier Within the happy family circle, from which my children are now gone, these oft recounted recollections became a part of their education. I permitted them to turn the pages of my memory, as the leaves of a book, that they might learn the vanished glory of the old South - the loving loyalty and the sad travail of her people. And I trust that they learned also that our unfor tunate Civil War - now, thank God, nearly sixty years behind us - was a clash of honest principles. Excerpt from Brave Deeds of Confederate Soldiers In the composition of the present volume, I was indebted particularly to John Esten Cooke's Wear ing of the Gray, and C01. Jennings C. Wise's Mil itary History of the Virginia Military Institute, for the vivid impression which they gave me of the high, the gallant, and the romantic aspects of the Confederate Soldier's character. I was also in debted to Mr. W. H. Sargeant, of the Norfolk Public Library, for numerous courtesies that facil itated my use, of the valuable collection of works relating to Confederate History now in his custody.
