Backscattering coefficients in twenty logit frequency bands between 0.1 and 10 kcps from seven explosions at six locations in the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea are reported. Five different physiographic provinces are represented, but environmental data are insufficient to relate scattering coefficients to the measurement locales. High fluctuation as a function of angle of incidence at frequencies below 1 kcps is interpreted as due to reflections from below the bottom while small fluctuations and occasional distinct echoes above 1 kcps are taken to be due to the topography of the sea floor. At low frequencies there is a somewhat larger dependence of the scattering coefficient on the angle of incidence than was found at higher frequencies. (Author).

Measurements of bottom reverberation were made at six locations in the Norwegian Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, and scattering strengths determined for grazing angles between 83 deg 30 min and 35 deg 30 min, and one-third octave frequencies from 2.5 to 12.5 kHz. In general, the data are consistent with the concept of Volovova and Zhitovskiy (1965), in which the bottom is considered to be composed of roughness elements much greater and much smaller than the wavelengths of the incident sound, with each type of roughness producing characteristic effects in the reverberation. Among these effects, evident in the analyzed data, are a small dependence of scattering strength on frequency at high grazing angles, and a greater dependence at low grazing angles. Scattering strengths at the higher frequencies do not decrease as much with decreasing grazing angles as do those at the lower frequencies. Standard deviations of scattering strengths are greatest at high grazing angles and low frequencies. Contrary to the data presented by Randlett and Urick (1968), no clear relationships between bottom scattering strength and physiographic province are evident, but this is perhaps due to the small number of stations studied. Bottom reverberation measurements made at 123 sites in different physiographic provinces in the North Atlantic are described. From these measurements bottom backscattering strengths have been computed as a function of grazing angle between 35 deg and 75 deg for octave frequency bands ranging from that centred at 141 Hz to that at 18.1 kHz. The results are presented in tabular form and are also compared with other published data from the appropriate physiographic provinces. (Author).

Download Bottom Reverberation Measured With Explosive Charges Fired Deep in the Ocean Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Bottom reverberation was measured at five locations in the North Atlantic using a hydrophone and explosive charges suspended near the ocean floor. Measured backscattering strengths in the frequency range from 800 Hz to 12.8 kHz show a tendency to rise moderately with frequency. The dependence on grazing angle was found to vary between a sine to the one-half and a sine-squared relation. Measurements made at several depths indicate that a portion of the reverberation originates in the subbottom layer structure directly beneath the point of measurement. At frequencies above 400 Hz, this reverberation from the subbottom appears to contribute significantly only at the steeper grazing angles. (Author).

vi These categories seem to represent the basic breakdown by field of present-day research in this area. Though each paper has been classified into one of these categories (for conference organization purpose), many papers overlapped two or three areas. It is also interesting to note that not only are scientific results being communicated, but the latest techniques and the state-of-the-art tools of the trade (existing and in development) are also being presented. The forty-six papers presented at this conference represent the work of seventy scientists working at universities, government laboratories, and industrial laboratories in seven different countries . We would like to thank the contributors for their efforts and especially for their promptness in providing the editors with their final manuscripts. William A. Kuperman Finn B.
