Excerpt from The New England Fruit Book: Being a Descriptive Catalogue of the Most Valuable Varieties of the Pear, Apple, Peach, Plum, and Cherry, for New England Culture In publishing a new edition of " Manning's Book of Fruits," it is thought advisable to add outline drawings of some of the best varieties of Pears found in his descriptive catalogue, (most of which we have grown ourselves, ) together with a few others of recent introduction. The compiler would briefly say, that in his remarks, drawn from various sources, upon the cultivation of fruit, together with his own limited experience, his object is to render some service to the cultivator, by collecting and condensing from various sources, such directions as seemed of most importance in practice. Some of the varieties of pears, which from farther experience were found not desirable, are omitted in this edition. We have not inserted drawings of apples in the compilation, from the difficulty of identifying this fruit by single specimens. Our object is to bring together the experience of practical cultivators in a condensed form, and at a low price.
