Excerpt from Book of Etiquette, Vol. 1 Success without culture is like old-fashioned straw berry short cake without the whipped cream. It has no flavor. There are certain little courteous Observances, certain social formalities that bespeak the true lady, the true gentleman. Some of us call it good form. Some of us call it culture. Some of us call it etiquette. But we all admit that it makes the world a better place to live in. In Italy, young men and women are considered ban educato, not when they can read and write, but when they know the established forms of convention - when they can show by a correct dignity and ease of manner that they are perfect in their knowledge of the rules of good society. And, after all, don't you yourself judge people by What they do, and say, and wear? Don't you read in their manner and appearance the secret of their inner worth? Isn't character and disposition revealed in the outer personality? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Everyman's Encyclopedia of Etiquette, Vol. 1: What to Write, What to Wear, What to Do, What to Say; A Book of Manners for Everyday Use The mistake must never be made of leading a lady about a room full of guests and introducing her to as many persons as possible. Only a débutante or youthful member of society may be conducted across a drawing room or ballroom, and then in order to be presented to a woman older than herself. When the introduction to be made is of a man to a woman, the gentleman is always taken to the lady. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Do unto others as you would others should do to you. You can never be rude if you bear the rule always in mind, for what lady likes to be treated rudely? True Christian politeness will always be the result of an unselfish regard for the feelings of others, and though you may err in the ceremonious points of etiquette, you will never be im polite. Politeness, founded upon such a rule, becomes the expression, in graceful manner, of social virtues. The spirit of politeness consists in a certain attention to forms and ceremonies, which are meant both to please others and ourselves, and to make others pleased with us ;a still clearer definition may be given by saying that politeness is goodness of heart put into daily practice; the.re can be no true, politeness without kindness, purity, singleness of heart, and sensibility. Many believe that politeness is but a mask worn in the world to conceal bad passions and impulses, and to make a show of possessing virtues not really existing in the heart; thus, that politeness is merely hypocrisy and dissimulation. Do not believe this; be certain that those who profess such a doctrine are practising themselves the deceit they condemn so much.

Excerpt from The I-Li, Vol. 1: Or Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial The challenge thrown out by Dr. Legge in 1885 (vide L., Intro., p. 5, note 2), calling for a complete translation of the I-li, has not hitherto been responded to. Passages from the work have been reproduced, notably by Dr. De Groot in his monumental book on "The Religious System of China," but no one who had not a knowledge of Chinese character could read it as a whole. I have ventured here to present a complete translation of the I-li into English; annotating some of the parts which require elucidation; calling attention to parallel, and illustrative passages from other Chinese works; discussing the composition, age, and history of the transmission of it; and endeavouring to indicate its relation to the other two members of the Li group. No one had better right than Dr. Legge to call for workers in a territory through whose forests he had driven a royal road by his translation of the Li-chi. His introduction to that book leaves little to be done even upon the origins of the I-li. But there were points to be cleared up, facts to be correlated, and some mistakes in translation and annotation to be rectified, and this I have endeavoured to do in the interests of scholarship. Excerpt from "Dame Curtsey's" Book of EtiquetteIt is always an acceptable clue to people who are being introduced if the hostess IS thoughtful enough to mention some thing that will start the conversation, as, Mrs. Edwards has just returned from Europe, going over much Of the ground you covered last year; or, Mr. Green is devoted to golf, so I know that you will have much ln common. It is these personal touches that make a woman popular in society. When two women are to be introduced the elder Of the two is always addressed, but when there is no marked inequality in age or distinction either name is mentioned first. The proper response to an introduction is, I am happy to meet you 0r I am very glad to meet you. If two women are seated and the hostess makes an introduction, both should rise, but if one is Old, or an invalid, it is proper to remain seated. A woman need not rise when a man is presented, but a man always rises, and Shakes hands when presented to another man.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Book Of Etiquette (Volume I): In Two Volumes, Vol. I. This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
