Collection consists of production files for Book Club of California publications, financial records, newsletters, and a small number of administrative files. The production files, which make up the bulk of the collection, consist of editorial correspondence, correspondence with the Club's Secretary, as well as manuscripts and galley proofs for the Club's series of annual book publications (1914-1994, 2001) and annual Keepsake series publications (1933-1995). Production files for the Keepsake series, which are often mailed in monthly installments to members of the Club, also include editions of the final publications. Financial records in the collection include, most notably, member ledger sheets from 1913 to 1943 as well as other account books dating from 1913 to 1987, many of which also contain membership information. The collection includes copies of the Club's quarterly newsletter from 1933 to 1998. These newsletters may include lists of newly elected members, obituaries of club members, reviews of annual activities, historical reviews of the Club's activities, and notes on publications. In addition, the collection contains materials relating to other publications connected to the Club or its members, including a number of correspondence files and manuscript drafts relating to the publication of Club member Louise Farrow Barr's Presses of Northern California and Their Books, 1900-1933 by the University of California Press in 1934. The administrative files are small in number and relate primarily to Club business from the mid-1970s through the early 1990s.

NPR Book of the Year 2020 Electric Literature: One of 55 Books by Women and Nonbinary Writers of Color to Read in 2020 | Lit Hub & The Millions: Most Anticipated Books of 2020 | Ms. Magazine: Anticipated 2020 Feminist Books | Refinery29: Books by Black Women We are Looking Forward To Reading | One of The Millions’ Most Anticipated Reads of 2020 | Amazon Book of the Month Pick | Audible Editor’s Pick | Essence’s Pick| Glamour’s Must Read | Ms. Magazine’s Anticipated Read of 2020 A startling debut about class and race, Lakewood evokes a terrifying world of medical experimentation—part The Handmaid’s Tale, part The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. When Lena Johnson’s beloved grandmother dies, and the full extent of the family debt is revealed, the black millennial drops out of college to support her family and takes a job in the mysterious and remote town of Lakewood, Michigan. On paper, her new job is too good to be true. High paying. No out of pocket medical expenses. A free place to live. All Lena has to do is participate in a secret program—and lie to her friends and family about the research being done in Lakewood. An eye drop that makes brown eyes blue, a medication that could be a cure for dementia, golden pills promised to make all bad thoughts go away. The discoveries made in Lakewood, Lena is told, will change the world—but the consequences for the subjects involved could be devastating. As the truths of the program reveal themselves, Lena learns how much she’s willing to sacrifice for the sake of her family. Provocative and thrilling, Lakewood is a breathtaking novel that takes an unflinching look at the moral dilemmas many working-class families face, and the horror that has been forced on black bodies in the name of science.

Lewis Carstairs Gunn (1813-1892) and Elizabeth LeBreton Stickney (1811-1906) made their home in Philadelphia after their marriage in 1839, and Lewis left for California in 1849, with his wife and four children joining him two years later. Records of a California family (1928) begins with Lewis Gunn's journal describing his journey from New Orleans to Mexico and then to San Francisco and his life as a miner on the San Joaqun̕, 1849-1850. Mrs. Gunn's letters chronicle her voyage round the Horn with four children in 1851 and their life in Sonora (1851-1861), where her husband published the Sonora Herald and owned a drugstore. She records the affairs of a family (housework, schools, medical care), newspaper publishing, and politics. The Gunns were longtime abolitionists, and Lewis's role in keeping California a free state is detailed. In 1861 the family moved to San Francisco, and the book closes with chapters by Anna Marston summarizing their life there in the 1860s and their later experiences in San Diego.
