Explore the mystical poetic journey of life, pain, love, and self-realization through the eyes of a black woman in western society. In understanding the strength and gracefulness of a Swan, one can observe the beauty of evolution against the obstacles in which it has persevered—presenting a perfect combination of durability and delicacy. This book speaks to those who feel lost, as well as those who have overcome adversity. This piece of work truly displays the power one can achieve through transcending the illusion of limitations.

Winner of the 2001 Cave Canem Prize Selected by Marilyn Nelson Finalist, 2003 Paterson Poetry Prize "Imagine Leda black—" begins Lyrae Van Clief-Stefanon’s exciting new collection of poems. Mixing vernacular language with classical mythology, modern struggles with Biblical trials, she gives voice to silenced women past and present. In Van Clief-Stefanon’s powerful voice, last night’s angry words "puffed / into the dark room like steam / punching through the thick surface / of cooking grits." She remembers a child’s innocence "lost / in the house where I learned the red rug / against my chest, my knees / my tongue, . . . ." Black Swan is filled with pain, loss, hope, and the promise of salvation.

Roman historians suggested the black swan never existed as a species found in the natural world. However, poets well know the icon of the black swan is alive and well and swimming across many sign posts of pubs in the British Isles. Read these poems and savor a lyrical exuberance that activates, quickens and celebrates a cosmic song.

A black swan is an unpredictable event that is beyond what is normally expected of a situation and has potentially severe consequences. Black swan events are characterized by their extreme rarity, severe impact, and the widespread insistence that were obvious in hindsight. I was originally going to do a modern-day Decameron, 100 poems over 100 days during the lockdown. To date, I have written over 1600 in total! So, how appropriate a title, "My Black Swan Calling & other Poems!" This book of poetry will be a roller coaster ride of personal emotions with my love of nature showcased throughout, with some highly metaphorical poems. Join me on a personal journey through nature and a final chapter, on dark poetry, dedicated to the Dark Poetry Society Facebook group and my fellow co-owner, muse and best friend Amanda Jayne Benton.
