The acclaimed naturalist offers an in-depth profile of the timber rattlesnake, from its unique biological adaptations to its role in American history. The ominous rattle of the timber rattlesnake is one of the most famous—and terrifying—sounds in nature. Today, they are found in thirty-one states and many major cities. Yet most Americans have never seen a timber rattler, and only know them from movies or our frightened imaginations. Ted Levin aims to change that with America’s Snake. This portrait of the timber rattler explores its significance in American frontier history, and sheds light on the heroic efforts to protect the species against habitat loss, climate change, and the human tendency to kill what we fear. Taking us from labs where the secrets of the snake’s evolutionary adaptations are being unlocked to far-flung habitats that are protected by dedicated herpetologists, Levin paints a picture of a fascinating creature: peaceable, social, long-lived, and, despite our phobias, not inclined to bite. The timber rattler emerges here as an emblem of America, but also of the struggles involved in protecting the natural world. A wonderful mix of natural history, travel writing, and exemplary journalism, America’s Snake is loaded with remarkable characters—none more so than the snake itself: frightening, fascinating, and unforgettable. Milksnakes by Bryan Engler and Jerry Walls is devoted to this most diverse of snakes, whose color variations in the pet world exceed those found in nature, illustrating how wildly popular milksnakes are with hobbyists. Thanks to milksnakes' hardiness, ease of breeding and feeding, and generally friendly nature, these attractive snakes have few disadvantages for keepers. They're modestly sized (maxing out at 3 or 4 feet), and their many colorful patterns are undeniably eye-catching, as captured in the photographs of this book. This Advanced Vivarium Systems title includes information about selecting and purchasing a healthy milksnake, housing and maintenance needs, feeding, handling, and health care. A separate chapter on diseases and disorders provides a complete primer on the health needs and veterinary care. The authors discuss fifteen superb milksnakes in the chapter "The Most Popular Milksnakes," from the black milksnake to the Utah milksnake, offering descriptions and color photographs of each. The chapter "Almost Milksnakes," covering six similar kingsnakes, and a fascinating chapter about milksnake hybrids will both prove of great interest to lovers of these friendly snakes. Resources and index included.

The milk snake is a non-threatening species of snake found in the Americas. These snakes are eye-catching because of the bright bands or rings of red, black, yellow, and white that characterizes their appearance. The red bands are often framed in black, and thin black stripes separate the red from the yellow and white bands. Milk snakes' patterns are commonly mistaken for the deadly coral snake's, however the bands on each species are arranged differently. Depending on species and geographic area, milk snakes can reach lengths of 20 to 60 inches (50 to 152 cm). They don't pose any health risks to people and help keep rodent populations in check because to their diet of small rodents. Because of their good looks and manageable size, several reptile fans keep them as pets. There are multiple subspecies and color variations of milk snakes, and they can be found in various settings, including woods, grasslands, and rocky places. The traditional misconception that these snakes would enter barns in search of milking cows is likely where the moniker "milk snake" was first coined.
