Download Texas Labor History Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A helpful new source for scholars and teachers who wish to fill in some of the missing pieces. Tackling a number of such presumptions—that a viable labor movement never existed in the Lone Star State; that black, brown, and white laborers, both male and female, were unable to achieve even short-term solidarity; that labor unions in Texas were ineffective because of laborers’ inability to confront employers—the editors and contributors to this volume lay the foundation for establishing the importance of labor to a fuller understanding of Texas history.

Download The debate on black civil rights in America Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book examines the historiography of the African American freedom struggle from the 1890s to the present. It considers how, and why, the study of African American history developed from being a marginalized subject in American universities and colleges at the start of the twentieth century to become one of the most extensively researched fields in American history today. There is analysis of the changing scholarly interpretations of African American leaders from Booker T. Washington through to Barack Obama. The impact and significance of the leading civil rights organizations are assessed, as well as the white segregationists who opposed them and the civil rights policies of presidential administrations from Woodrow Wilson to Donald Trump. The civil rights struggle is also discussed in the context of wider, political, social and economic changes in the United States and developments in popular culture.

Download Southern Labor and Black Civil Rights Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Widely praised upon publication and now considered a classic study, Southern Labor and Black Civil Rights chronicles the southern industrial union movement from the Great Depression to the Cold War, a history that created the context for the sanitation workers' strike that brought Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Memphis in April 1968. Michael K. Honey documents the dramatic labor battles and sometimes heroic activities of workers and organizers that helped to set the stage for segregation's demise. Winner of the Charles S. Sydnor Award, given by the Southern Historical Association, 1994. Winner of the James A. Rawley Prize given by the Organization of American Historians, 1994. Winner of the Herbert G. Gutman Award for an outstanding book in American social history.

Download A New Deal for Blacks Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A watershed decade in U.S. history, the 1930s witnessed a struggle on various fronts--fought by many different Americans--that raised the country's awareness of the inequalities and injustices suffered by African Americans. Featuring a new preface and an expansive, up-to-date bibliography, this 30th Anniversary Edition of Harvard Sitkoff's A New Deal for Blacks presents a comprehensive account of the changes--substantive and symbolic--that eventually led to the emergence of civil rights as a national issue and helped make a successful quest for racial justice possible. It emphasizes a wide variety of individuals and organizations that contributed to the coming-of-age of civil rights, and highlights the role of New Dealers, organized labor, the Left, Southern women opposed to lynching, biological and social scientists, black lawyers, and, especially, African American organizations that planted the seeds of racial progress. This unique text is an ideal resource for undergraduate courses in African American history.

Download Civil Rights in Black and Brown Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Not one but two civil rights movements flourished in mid-twentieth century Texas, and they did so in intimate conversation with one another. Far from the gaze of the national media, African American and Mexican American activists combated the twin caste systems of Jim Crow and Juan Crow. These insurgents worked chiefly within their own racial groups, yet they also looked to each other for guidance and, at times, came together in solidarity. The movements sought more than integration and access: they demanded power and justice. Civil Rights in Black and Brown draws on more than 500 oral history interviews newly collected across Texas, from the Panhandle to the Piney Woods and everywhere in between. The testimonies speak in detail to the structure of racism in small towns and huge metropolises—both the everyday grind of segregation and the haunting acts of racial violence that upheld Texas’s state-sanctioned systems of white supremacy. Through their memories of resistance and revolution, the activists reveal previously undocumented struggles for equity, as well as the links Black and Chicanx organizers forged in their efforts to achieve self-determination.
