Early in 1985, a meeting was held to discuss the organization of a work shop in honour of Professor Reinier L. Zielhuis on the occasion of his retirement on November 30,1986. Various themes for such a workshop were considered, but it was Zielhuis himself, who ultimately selected "Health surveillance of individual workers exposed to chemical agents" as the theme of the workshop. Although this topic is of the utmost im portance for occupational health practice, it is also a very difficult one, given our currently limited knowledge on the subject. The choice of this topic is characteristic of Reinier Zielhuis, a scientist and scholar who throughout his career has been deeply concerned with the health and health risks of workers. Because he regards occupational and environmental exposure - including life style - as two aspects of the total exposure to chemical and physical factors, he emphasizes the need to assess the impact of this total exposure on workers' health. The impact of total exposure probably detennines to a large extent the in dividual variability in response. This was the main reason why he selected the above-mentioned topic for the workshop.

1.1 Organisation and aims This International Seminar, organised jointly by the Com mission of the European Communities and the United States authorities (Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) has brought together more than 150 participants from the Member States of the European Community, from the United States, and also from Greece, Finland, Sweden and Switzer land. The aim of the Seminar was to examine the roles of ambient and biological monitoring in protecting the health of workers exposed to toxic agents and to define a multidisciplinary approach to this monitoring. To achieve this aim expertise from the following disciplines, directly or indirectly involved with monitoring, was called upon: medicine, industrial hygiene, nursing, biology, engi neering, chemistry, epidemiology, statistics, economics and jurisprudence, and representatives from trade unions, indus try and government agencies. The difference in concepts that each of these disciplines has of monitoring and of its role in the team is fully reflected in the papers. 1.2 Current trends in occupational health and hygiene (as related to monitoring).

Download Biological Monitoring of Chemical Exposure in the Workplace Guidelines Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Provides guidelines for the biological monitoring of occupational exposure to four metals (aluminium, arsenic, cobalt, and nickel), three solvents (benzene, methanol, and methylene chloride), two groups of pesticides (dithiocarbamates and pyrethroids), aromatic amines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Guidelines for each chemical follow a common framework. The chemical is first introduced in terms of its physical and chemical properties, possible occupational and non-occupational exposures, data on toxicokinetics and toxic effects, and a comparison of currently available biological indicators of exposure. Recommended biomarkers are then discussed in terms of suggested methods of sampling and analysis, and guidelines for the interpretation of test results.
