Excerpt from Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence, Vol. 1 That subject then is the delineation of human character. Not so much by a minute and metaphysical investigation of its qualities, as by a description of the incidents which de velop and display it: its study, in this manner, has at all times been the most favourite pursuit of those who find plea sure in literature, and it has conferred the highest crown on the authors who have been most successful in attempting it. It is the foundation of all romantic fiction, of dramatic com position, and of the highest efl'orts of poetic genius. In each of these, the lively, vivid, and powerful delineation of indi vidual actions, and through them of individual character, constitutes the principal charm. It is this talent which has placed Homer above all other writers, since he has been able to give entire reality to actions, many of which are most probably solely the fruits of his own imagination and inven tion, aided by a long and careful observation of the world around him. Excerpt from Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence, Vol. 7 The great tragic poet of antiquity has observed, and historians and philosophers in every age, have repeated the observation, that no one should be pronounced happy till death has closed the period of human uncertainty. Yet if to be happy, is to descend into the vale of years, loved and honoured; to enjoy in life, that posthumous fame, which is usually bestowed only beyond the tomb; to see the labours of our earlier years, crowned with more than hoped for success; and to find those theoretic visions which untried, could offer nothing more than expected excellence, exceeding in practical utility their promised advantages; if these can confer aught of hap piness on this side the grave, then may the subject of our memoir be esteemed truly happy. He has indeed outlived those who were the partners of his toils, and the companions of his earlier years; but in so doing, he has not experienced the usual fate of mor tality, in outliving the sympathy, the kindness and the love of his fellow creatures. A new race of companions has risen around him, who have added to those feelings the deeper ones of admiration, respect, and gratitude.
