Nothing need be said here relative to the importance of popular education, nor is it necessary to urge in any manner whatever that its value is appreciated by the people of this State. Both its imperative importance and its popular appreciation are apparent to all. It is pleasing, moreover, to be able to note the fact that no State or country has ever done more, under the circumstances, than has Oregon, to promote sound, thorough, practical education. The strong and growing educational sentiment throughout the State, inspires confident anticipations of even nobler achievements in the future. Parents and guardians not only, but the great aggregate community as well, are fully awake to the fact that no other legacy so rich was ever bequeathed to posterity as that of a good practical education, and all are keenly sensitive to any act, thought or feeling, that may in any respect endanger so inestimable a boon.
