Excerpt from Bibliography of Arizona: Being the Record of Literature Collected by Joseph Amasa Munk, M. D., And Donated by Him to the Southwest Museum of Los Angeles, California I knew that while the books remained in my possession, they could not he of much use to others; and I sought a place to put them where they would be safe for the future under proper supervision, and where they would be accessible to those who might want to consult their pages. To keep them hidden away in seclusion would do nobody any good, and, if kept thus too long, the work of a life-time might be dissipated and lost through uninterested heirs. Naturally I felt inclined to give favorable consideration to any claims which the State of Arizona might have in a library that represented Arizona exclusively. It being then only a Territory, and too new yet to be highly developed, and with no facilities provided for taking care of such a library, I feared that if it were given to the State under those circumstances.
