Excerpt from Biblical Natural Science, Vol. 2: Being the Explanation of All References in Holy Scripture to Geology, Botany, Zoology, and Physical Geography These references are all we have to enable us to identify the plant named here. It has been too hastily assumed that it must have been the true paper reed, or papyrus, for which Egypt in ancient times was celebrated. It is indeed true, that one of the passages quoted from Isaiah is clear on the point, that it was often used for this purpose, and that the notices of it which occur in profane authors point to the same fact. But this does not determine the matter. We know from Herodotus that sandals were frequently made from it, but this does not warrant the inference that all sandals were made from this material. The only conclusion to which in the circumstances we can come is, that under the term bulrush (cyperus) any description suitable for this purpose may be referred to, and that under the term flags different sorts of reed - mace (typlza) are indicated. Excerpt from Nature and the Bible, Vol. 2: Lectures on the Mosaic History of Creation in Its Relation to Natural Science In the Biblical account of creation it is only said that the origin Of the vegetable and animal world must be referred to the creative activity of God, and that God has taken measures for the reproduction and pre servation of the species Of plants and animals. We are not told how the first organic beings originated, and still less how thenceforth the separate individuals should come into existence; whether all plants should spring only from seeds or shoots, and all animals should come into existence by means Of procreation or from eggs or germs, or whether there should be other ways also. The author of Genesis had no reason for entering into such scientific details. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is generally assumed that science and religion are at war. Many now claim that science has made religious belief redundant; others have turned to a literalist interpretation of biblical creation to reject or revise science; others try to resolve Darwin with Genesis. "The Nature of Creation" addresses this complex debate by engaging with both modern science and biblical scholarship together. Creation is central to Christian theology and the Bible, and has become the chosen battleground for scientists, atheists and creationists alike. "The Nature of Creation" presents a sustained historical investigation of what the creation texts of the Bible have to say and how this relates to modern scientific ideas of beginnings. The book aims to demonstrate what science and religion can share, and how they differ and ought to differ.

Experts in their respective fields, these two authors provide a way to resolve seeming conflicting descriptions.
