"Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the gold standard of treatment for patients with lymphoma and myeloma. The problem identified in this evidence-based practice change is that the current practice of initiating apheresis collection with a threshold of 15 CD34+ cell count is difficult for patients with suboptimal marrow function to successfully mobilize and collect stem cells for stem cell transplant. The project included the development and implementation of an evidence-based practice guideline for mobilization and collection of stem cells. The practice change project was implemented in a large southwestern cancer center. As an oncology nurse practitioner practicing in the stem cell transplant department, this evidence-based project and results will impact the care delivery to the apheresis patient population. Efficacy, education and safety measures are all important entities when apheresis is used as a treatment modality. The goal of lowering the threshold for collection while ultimately obtaining increased mobilization for older patients and those with decreased bone marrow function is key in impacting patient outcomes. All of the patients in this evidence-based practice chance project were successful with apheresis collection. Nursing belief's regarding evidence based practice and the education of those nurses will render a positive patient experience and improved quality of care. There was 100 percent participation from the nine nurses in the apheresis clinic in the educational intervention and survey of EBP beliefs.
