A series of compression tests are conducted on 3 in. by 6 in. cylindrical specimens using a modified testing method that give the complete stress-strain behavior for both plain and fibrous high strength concretes with or without tie confinements. The volume fractions of fiber in the concrete are 0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0%, respectively. Empirical equations are proposed herein to represent the complete stress-strain relationships of high strength and high strength fibrous concretes with compressive strength exceeding 10,000 psi. Various parameters are studied and their relationships are experimentally determined. The comparison between the experimental and analytical results shows to have good agreement. The proposed empirical stress-strain equations for high strength and high strength steel fiber concretes are used as material properties to modify the existing computer program of biaxially loaded slender reinforced concrete columns. This computer program evaluates the complete biaxial load-deflection and moment-curvature relationships of slender columns from zero load until failure. A total of nine high strength and five high strength steel fiber slender reinforced concrete columns are tested to compare their experimental load-deformation results with the analytical values derived from the present theoretical studies. A satisfactory agreement is attained for both ascending and descending branches of the load-deformation curves.

Concrete-filled stainless steel tubular (CFSST) columns are increasingly used in modern composite construction due to their high strength, high ductility, high corrosion resistance, high durability and aesthetics and ease of maintenance. Thin-walled CFSST columns are characterized by the different strain-hardening behavior of stainless steel in tension and in compression, local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement. Design codes and numerical models often overestimate or underestimate the ultimate strengths of CFSST columns. This book presents accurate and efficient computational models for the nonlinear inelastic analysis and design of CFSST short and slender columns under axial load and biaxial bending. The effects of different strain-hardening characteristics of stainless steel in tension and in compression, progressive local and post-local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement are taken into account in the computational models. The numerical models simulate the axial load-strain behavior, moment-curvature curves, axial load-deflection responses and axial load-moment strength interaction diagrams of CFSST columns. The book describes the mathematical formulations, computational procedures and model verifications for circular and rectangular CFSST short and slender columns. The behavior of CFSST columns under various loading conditions is demonstrated by numerous numerical examples. This book is written for practising structural and civil engineers, academic researchers and graduate students in civil engineering who are interested in the latest computational techniques and design methods for CFSST columns.

A numerical analysis was developed to evaluate the complete load-deflection and moment-curvature relationships for square and L-shaped slender reinforced concrete columns subjected to biaxial bending and axial load. This computer model can be used for any cross section geometry and material properties of normal concrete. The analysis was based on a deformation control and both the ascending and descending branches of curves can be studied. The finite difference method was introduced to calculate the deflections which satisfy the compatibility equations. Six square slender columns and eight L-shaped slender columns were tested to compare their experimental load-deformation results with the analytical results derived from the theoretical studies. A satisfactory agreement was achieved for the present study. The results of present study can be used for future design reference.

He inelastic behavior of irregular shaped reinforced concrete columns has been a constant concern for a structural engineer, to design a safe and economic structure in modern buildings and bridge piers. The shape of the elements in a reinforced concrete structure may be used to optimize its structural strength, to make better use of the available space, to improve the aesthetic appearance of the structure, or to facilitate construction. Due to the locations of the columns, the shapes of the buildings and the nature of the applied loads, many columns are subject to combined biaxial bending and axial load. Seven 1/4 scale direct models of the short, tied columns with channel-shaped cross sections were constructed for the present investigation. All the specimens were tested and studied for their complete strength and deformation behavior under combined biaxial bending moments and axial compression, and were used to examine some of the variables involved such as relative eccentricities and loading variations. The end conditions are assumed to be pinned-ended. The experimental load-strain and biaxial moment-curvature curves have been compared with the analytical results of the strength and deformation for biaxially loaded channel-shaped column members, and a satisfactory agreement was obtained from zero up to the ultimate load condition. The above inelastic behavior of channel-shaped reinforced concrete columns has formed the basis of the redistribution of the moments and forces in a statically indeterminate structure, and these characteristics can also be found useful for the limit analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures.

Combined biaxial and axial compression for L-shaped reinforced concrete short columns is a common design Problem. Current code, provisions and the available design aids do not offer an insight into the determination of strength and ductility of biaxially loaded reinforced concrete column. An experimental and analytical investigation of the moment-deformation behavior of biaxially loaded L-shaped short columns were undertaken. Four 1/2 scaled specimens were tested till failure. Moment-curvature and load-deflection curves were developed from the experimental and the analytical results. The analytical results were obtained using a computer program developed by Hsu (1). From the investigation it is deduced that the computer program developed by Hsu (1) can be used to find the ultimate strength, the moment-deformation characteristics, the stress and the strain distributions across the section of L-shaped, biaxially loaded column with large and small eccentricities.

Next to rectangular, circular and L shapes, Channel section may be the most frequently encountered reinforced concrete columns since they can be used as box wall for elevators. Nevertheless, information about the load deformation behavior is not generally available to structural engineers. Most of the investigations have been emphasized on the ultimate strength of column sections under combined biaxial bending and axial compression and the resulting interaction surface. No attention is paid to load deformation behavior. Current code provisions do not provide adequate guidelines for assessing the strength and ductility of biaxially-loaded reinforced concrete columns. Therefore, this investigation is aimed at an experimental and analytical study of the behavior of biaxially-loaded channel- shaped short columns as the applied load is increased monotonically from zero to failure. For the test purpose four reinforced concrete Channel shaped columns of nearly half the size of the true specimens were casted and tested till failure. Moment-Curvature and Load Deflection curves obtained from testing channel section were compared with the results from a computer program developed by Hsu1 and were found to be in excellent agreement. In addition a computer program was developed to calculate the ultimate flexural capacity of cracked arbitrary concrete sections under axial load and biaxial bending based on the Brondum-Nielsen s paper.
