In Race and Radio: Pioneering Black Broadcasters in New Orleans, Bala James Baptiste traces the history of the integration of radio broadcasting in New Orleans and tells the story of how African American on-air personalities transformed the medium. Analyzing a trove of primary data—including archived manuscripts, articles and display advertisements in newspapers, oral narratives of historical memories, and other accounts of African Americans and radio in New Orleans between 1945 and 1965—Baptiste constructs a formidable narrative of broadcast history, racism, and black experience in this enormously influential radio market. The historiography includes the rise and progression of black broadcasters who reshaped the Crescent City. The first, O. C. W. Taylor, hosted an unprecedented talk show, the Negro Forum, on WNOE beginning in 1946. Three years later in 1949, listeners heard Vernon "Dr. Daddy-O" Winslow's smooth and creative voice as a disk jockey on WWEZ. The book also tells of Larry McKinley who arrived in New Orleans from Chicago in 1953 and played a critical role in informing black listeners about the civil rights movement in the city. The racial integration of radio presented opportunities for African Americans to speak more clearly, in their own voices, and with a technological tool that opened a broader horizon in which to envision community. While limited by corporate pressures and demands from advertisers ranging from local funeral homes to Jax beer, these black broadcasters helped unify and organize the communities to which they spoke. Race and Radio captures the first overtures of this new voice and preserves a history of black radio's awakening.

This book contests a tradition and convention in educational thinking that dichotomises children and curriculum, by developing the notion of re(con)ceiving children in curriculum. By presenting an innovative research project, in which she worked with children to share their understandings of the internationally renowned Te Whāriki curriculum, Marg Sellers explores what the curriculum means to children and how it works, as demonstrated in games they played. In generating different ways for thinking, the author draws upon her work with the philosophical imaginaries of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, whose ideas shape both the content and the non-linear structure of this book. Topics covered include: Rhizomes, rhizo-methodology and rhizoanalysis; Plateaus; De~territorialising lines of flight; Dynamic spaces; The notion of empowerment. This assemblage of Deleuzo-Guattarian imaginaries generates ways for thinking differently about children’s complex interrelationships with curriculum, and opens possibilities for re(con)ceiving – both reconceiving and receiving – children’s understandings within adult conceptions of how curriculum works for young children. This book will be of interest to early childhood students, scholars and practitioners alike, also appealing to those interested in philosophical, theoretical and practical understandings of curriculum in general.

'I reckon throwing that rock through the window of Phelan's butcher shop was one of the best things I ever did. But I didn't think so at the time ...' So begins the Ted Egan story. Old Phelan presented Ted's mother with a bill: TO WINDOW BROKEN BY TEDDY EGAN £5 5s 0d. Ted was going to have to find the money. He got it as a paperboy, shouting 'Herooda paper!' on street corners. Jumping on and off the No. 20 tram rattling out of the city of Melbourne into Coburg. Ducking back to the newsagency to get a Women's Weekly for a woman in the Ladies' lounge of Brown's Hotel. In The Paperboy's War the well-known outback folklorist, singer, songwriter, historian, and television presenter recalls his early days, his priestly vocation, the warmth of family life, the agony of puberty, and Melbourne in the 1940s. A great and terrible war raged, but here we see it from a unique perspective: the paperboy. At home the Yanks were taking over leafy Parkville, the dance floors and the women's hearts. Even - black Yanks! Nights at home would be spent tracing the exploits of brave Timoshenko at Stalingrad, speculating on how 'people who live in paper houses' like the Japanese couldn't cause too much trouble, and gaining an encyclopedic knowledge of divisional shoulder patches, enemy aircraft silhouettes and the classes of warships. Ted Egan rekindles the pride Australians felt for 'the Rats' at Tobruk and those who slugged it out on the Kokoda Trail. But life and dreams go on, war or no war. Every schoolday the excruciatingly beautiful Norma would hop on the tram at The Grove. Br. 'Slick' Edwards at the Christian Brothers would read Man Shy and there arouse a love of words. The return of cousin Frank, the bronzed Anzac from the Middle East, provided a role model. Aunt Mary's tales of the Murchison Goldfields stirred a wish to travel. And there was cousin Bill, who had run away to sea at 15, travelled the world and experienced the war at close quarters. He came back wearing Italian suits and gave the young Ted an idea. He too would be a sailor. Ted would leave Melbourne and go to Brazil, via Darwin. Ted Egan was born in Melbourne and spent the first sixteen years of his life there, the years covered by this book, the first of three telling of his life. He intended to drop in on the Northern Territorians for a month before going off to become a gaucho in South America, but ended up staying in the Territory for more than 40 years. Ted Egan studied under lamplight in the outback, gaining a BA from ANU. He is working on a post-graduate historical account of the clash between Aboriginal and western culture when a group of Japanese fishermen and a white policeman were speared to death in 1932. He learned two Aboriginal languages and has taught Aboriginal Studies at Alice Springs High School. He performs, writes, sings and records his own songs, and collects and records others. He is a television presenter and writer. He is a member of the Prime Minister's Reconciliation Council. Awarded the Order of Australia (AM) in 1993 for 'services to the Aboriginal community and contribution to the literary heritage of Australia through song and verse', he lives and works in Alice Springs.

Der Kliene Lump contains a series of true anecdotes about the winsome ways of a boy who experienced rare freedoms and "extravagances" in a harsh era defined by The Great Depression and World War II. The boy's family of seven was unique in heritage, faith, lifestyle, character, and appearance. Less than an acre of land, a primitive house, an outhouse, and five dinky buildings, which sheltered a menagerie of animals, defined their habitat. His mother wore a prayer covering and plain dress that belied her fiery temperament. She referred to her son as Der Kleine Lump (The Little Rascal; at times, The Scoundrel). When the author, John Paugstat, viewed the anecdotes as a composite picture, he saw a boy who, when nurtured by faith, family, and society, rose above the Woes of Poverty and enjoyed the Wows of Privilege and Adventure. The author would like to have been that boy, and so he was--resulting in anecdotes true to the limits of his memory. John Paugstat has degrees from the Universities of California and Cincinnati. He wrote articles on various subjects; he taught and spoke at conventions, corporate, and church-related functions. He has five patents, two published books, and three in development.

In the 1950s, just a few years after Newfoundland entered Confederation, the first official provincial resettlement program saw thousands of islanders leave their coastal out-port communities to resettle on the mainland. The plan was that families would have better access to schools, medical care, community infrastructure such as roads and electricity, and employment. For many, this included putting their houses on barges and floating them to their new location. Blue Moon on Water is the story of the fictional Moore family, their salt cod and lobster fishing community of Deer Island, and their ultimate decision to resettle. Told through the eyes of Hannah Marie, an inquisitive teenager, we follow the day-to-day lives of the people in her community and learn of their hopes, dreams, loves, celebrations, fishing, and food. Told with love, humour, and pride, these are the stories of people who have shaped the resilient culture of Newfoundland and the ever-indomitable spirit of its people.
