Because of Organ Donation Series: Book 2 Our children are as precious as the gift of life itself, so imagine when it's a child in need of a life-saving gift. Or maybe a parent is living their worst nightmare, but they choose to answer another family's prayer. If you had the power to be a hero as a living donor and save a child's life, would you do it? Almost 2,000 children are on the transplant waiting list, and the more than 500 children waiting for a donor organ are five and under. This collection of stories will give you a glimpse into pediatric organ donation and transplant. You will meet parents who never imagined their child would need a life-saving gift. You may find yourself empathizing with the family that had to make the incomprehensible decision for their own child to become an organ donor. You might cheer on the family member, friend, or complete stranger who wants to donate a kidney or a portion of their liver. Each chapter represents the amazing gifts that can come from organ donation.

In 1997, the Institute of Medicine published a report entitled Non-Heart- Beating Organ Transplantation: Medical and Ethical Issues in Procurement. The findings and recommendations of that study defined the ethical and scientific basis for non-heart-beating organ donation and transplantation, and provided specific recommendations for practices that affirm patient welfare, promote patient and family choice, and avoid conflicts of interest. Following the 1997 study, the Department of Health and Human Services requested a follow up study to promote such efforts. The central activity for this study was a workshop held in Washington, D.C., on May 24-25, 1999. The workshop provided the opportunity for extensive dialogue on non-heart-beating organ donation among hospitals and organ procurement organizations (OPOs) that are actively involved in non-heartbeating organ and tissue donation and those with concerns about whether and how to proceed. The findings and recommendations of this report are based in large measure on the discussions and insights from that workshop. Non-Heart-Beating Organ Transplantation includes seven recommendations for developing and implementing non-heart-beating-donor protocols. These recommendations were based on the findings and recommendations from the 1997 IOM report and consensus achieved among participants at the national workshop. The committee developed these recommendations as steps towards an approach to non-heart-beating-donor organ donation and procurement consistent with underlying scientific and ethical guidelines, patient and family options and choices, and public trust in organ donation.

This picture book was created for young children who are in need of a solid organ transplant. It was developed by two dedicated Social Workers at the University of Michigan Transplant Center to give these children and their families something to put them more at ease with the organ transplant process and to help them understand that they are not alone. The bright and colorful illustrations appeal to a child's eye. Simple text accompanies each illustration. A direct question (e.g. "Will I have stitches or a scar?") on one page is answered on the facing page, beneath an original illustration (e.g. "Your doctor will use stitches or a special kind of glue to help your body heal from the surgery. After the stitches come out, you will have a scar. This will always remind you of how brave you were!"). This book is the perfect accompaniment for young children who may need a transplant, as well as for siblings and other family members who have questions and would appreciate some assistance on how to talk about the transplant process.
