This report reviews the results of calculations which concern techniques of beam handling and emittance control for high current beams in advanced accelerators. Beam quality requirements for acceptable performance of beam driven free electron laser devices for SDI missions are examined. The beam quality achievable in high current, space-charge-limited diodes is reviewed and found to be potentially high. Emittance growth during gas-focused transport due to streaming instabilities between beam electrons and gas ions is briefly examined, and estimated to be modest. The principal threat to beam quality degradation is estimated to occur during the lengthy process of acceleration and transport past protuberances, constrictions, or discontinuities in the waveguide wall, or during beam aperturing. A Hamiltonian-theoretic analysis of emittance growth during high current electron beam transport, coupled with an envelope equation analysis of the induced transverse beam oscillations, is applied to develop scaling laws for the emittance growth suffered during such events as beam acceleration, propagation past irises or constrictions in the waveguide wall, beam aperturing, and axial variation in the magnetic guide filed strength. Criteria area developed for preventing excessive emittance growth by avoiding abrupt axial variations and providing sufficiently strong focusing forces. Designed variations in the waveguide wall shape and and in the strength of the magnetic guide field may be introduced to greatly reduce emittance growth during such events as beam acceleration. Keywords: Strategic defense initiative; Beam brightness; Emittance control; Beam quality; Beam transport; Image charge fields.

The thrust of our research on beam handling and emittance control has been to explore how one might design high current electron accelerators, with the preservation of high beam quality designed as the primary design consideration. We have considered high current, induction linacs in the parameter class of the ETA/ATA accelerators at LLNL, but with improvements to the accelerator gap design and other features to permit a significant increase in the deliverable beam brightness. Our approach for beam quality control has centered on the use of solenoidal magnetic focusing through such induction accelerators, together with gently-shaped (adiabatic) acceleration gaps. This approach offers several tools for the control of beam quality. The strength and axial variation in the solenoidal magnetic field may be designed, as may the length and shape of the acceleration gaps, the loading of the gaps, and the axial spacing from gap to gap. This research has shown that each of these design features may individually be optimized to contribute to improved beam quality control, and by exploiting these features, it appears feasible to produce high current, high energy electron beams possessing breakthrough beam quality and brightness. Applications which have been heretofore technologically unachievable may for the first time become possible. One such application is the production of high performance free electron lasers at very short wavelengths, extending down to the optical (

From the reviews: "This book is a very welcome and valuable addition to the accelerator literature. As noted by the authors, there is relatively little material in the book specifically for low-energy machines, but industrial users may still find it useful to read." Cern Courier

Download Ion Implantation Technology - 92 Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Ion implantation technology has made a major contribution to the dramatic advances in integrated circuit technology since the early 1970's. The ever-present need for accurate models in ion implanted species will become absolutely vital in the future due to shrinking feature sizes. Successful wide application of ion implantation, as well as exploitation of newly identified opportunities, will require the development of comprehensive implant models. The 141 papers (including 24 invited papers) in this volume address the most recent developments in this field. New structures and possible approaches are described. The implications for ion implantation technology as well as additional observations of needs and opportunities are discussed. The volume will be of value to all those who are interested in acquiring a more complete understanding of the current developments in ion implantation processes and comprehensive implant models.

Download Emittance Control of a Beam by Shaping the Transverse Charge Distribution, Using a Tomography Diagnostic Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A high-brightness beam is very important for many applications. A diagnostic that measures the multi-dimensional phase-space density-distribution of the electron bunch is a must for obtaining such beams. Measurement of a slice emittance has been achieved [1]. Tomographic reconstruction of phase space was suggested [2] and implemented [3,4] using a single quadrupole scan. In the present work we give special attention to the accuracy of the phase space reconstruction and present an analysis using a transport line with nine focusing magnets and techniques to control the optical functions and phases. This diagnostic, coupled with control of the radial charge distribution of presents an opportunity to improve the beam brightness. Combining the slice emittance and tomography diagnostics lead to an unprecedented visualization of phase space distributions in 5 dimensional phase-space and an opportunity to perform high-order emittance corrections.
