This paper examines the potential for military working dogs to support Special Operations Forces (SOF). Modern technology has not eliminated the operational prospective for the military employment of dogs. Canine olfactory superiority, advanced hearing, and ability to detect movement offer significant military employment potential. Military working dogs can be trained for scouting, patrolling, building and ship searches, countermine, counterdrug and tracking. When used properly, dogs are an inexpensive and efficient force multiplier. Qualitative research using correlational data comprises the monograph's methodology. Military working dog capabilities, limitations, and historical employment will be discussed and then compared to Special Operation Forces principal missions and collateral activities. The conclusion demonstrates that dogs have a wider role to perform in today s operational environment and that military working dogs can augment and complement SOF operations. Nearly every SOF mission can benefit from the inclusion of dogs particularly in support of Stability and Support Operations conducted in developing countries that cannot employ or sustain complex and technologically sophisticated equipment. Military working dogs are a proven, low technology, combat and combat support capability and may have a future role in support of Special Operations Forces.

How does war change when the people who do the fighting are no longer just human? When dogs, enhanced by artificial intelligence, can help their human masters track their foes, or when a horse wants to prove that he can be a sailor too? Does the dreadful calculus of warfare change when some of the people involved have fur? What happens on the battlefield is only the start--and soldiers are not the only ones who face the consequences. In the aftermath of any conflict, people must rebuild what was lost, consolidate what was gained, and decide if it was worth the price. Dogs of War II Aftermath is an anthology exploring what warfare looks like when the combatants are no longer fully human. It contains twenty stories about how war changes when those who do the fighting have changed, and how much it stays just the same. PEACE MAY SELL…BUT WHAT IF NO ONE’S BUYING? On 21 May 3052, the seemingly unstoppable military juggernaut of the invading Clans was defeated in a pitched campaign on the quiet world of Tukayyid. This astonishing victory bought the weary armies of the Inner Sphere a fifteen-year stay before the invasion can resume. But despite the truce, the fire driving the Clans’ centuries-long quest to conquer Terra, the birthplace of humankind, and rebuild Inner Sphere civilization in their warmongering image has not been extinguished. Conflict still rages above the truce line, and the Clans are biding their time until the tide of war can surge up and flood the Inner Sphere once more. Slack Tide collects nine stories that chronicle the life-and-death struggles still being waged in the wake of Tukayyid’s so-called peace. Fan-favorite authors such as Jason Hansa, Philip A. Lee, and Craig A. Reed, Jr. spin tales of undercover operatives seeking to gain the secrets of Clan BattleMech technology, Inner Sphere MechWarriors attempting dangerous escapes from Clan-controlled planets, and mercenaries fighting to protect the only things that truly matter to them—themselves and their loved ones. The Clans’ invasion may have been temporarily halted, but the true battles for the future of the Inner Sphere have only just begun…

Since ancient times, dogs have played a large part in warfare. From war dogs trained for combat purposes to dogs used as scouts, they have played an important role in military history. Throughout World War II, the United States Marine Corps used dogs, which were donated by their American owners. In the Pacific Theater, they were integral in taking backs islands from Japanese occupying forces. During this period, the Doberman Pinscher became the official dog of the United States Marine Corps. However, all breeds of dogs were permitted to train to be war dogs of the Pacific. Of the 549 dogs that returned from the war, only four could not be returned to civilian life. Many of the dogs went home with their handlers from the war. Later, scout dogs were used in Korea and Vietnam to detect ambushes, weapon caches, or enemy fighters hiding underwater. Created in 1943, this technical manual details a great deal about the war dog training process. Furthermore, it takes an in depth look in to the psychological conditioning of the dog. Originally labeled restricted, thismanual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.
