A North American fishing handbook from one of the great masters of the sport. First published in 1903, Bass, Pike, Perch, and Others remains a reliable resource for fishing enthusiasts in North America. As part of the American Sportman’s Library, this handbook was set apart as an important text on sporting subjects from an American perspective, provided here by Dr. James A. Henshall, who spent decades studying fish and fishing. Henshall, called both the “Apostle of the Black Bass” and the “Dean of American Anglers,” is one of the most important conservationists and fish culturists in our nation’s history, best known for originating bass fishing. Here, Henshall provides information on all the game fish families of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, including: • Sunfish • Bass • Perch • Grayling • Drum • Minnow • Catfish • Grouper • Cavalla • Grunt This guide, complete with the original black-and-white illustrations and personal anecdotes from Henshall, is a must-have classic for any serious angler. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Excerpt from Pike and Perch: With Notes on Record Pike and a Chapter on the Black Bass, Murray Cod and Other Sporting Members of the Perch Family The tail is large and rather forked the pectoral and ventral fins are small; there are mucous orifices in pairs on the head; also some in single rows in the lower jaw-bones; the cheeks and upper parts of gill-covers have scales on them. Pike are silvery white on the belly, but their other colourings vary according to location and season of the year. In spring and summer, while aquatic vegetation is green, they are mottled with white, yellow, and green; in autumn and winter, olive brown mottled with green, thus assimilating to the surrounding conditions of decaying weeds and sedges - the head and back are dark olive brown tail, dorsal, and anal fin dark brown, mixed with red and dark green on the fin-rays; the pectoral and ventral fins are pale brown, and the gills a vivid red. Excerpt from Bass, Pike, Perch and Others In this volume are included all of the game-fishes of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, except the salmons and trouts, and the tarpon, jewfish, and other fishes of large size, which are described in other volumes of this series. As a matter of convenience I have grouped the fishes in families, whenever possible, but in their sequence I have been guided chiefly by their importance as game-fishes, and not in accordance with their natural order. The latter feature, however, has been provided for in a systematic list on a subsequent page. In order not to burden the text with matter that might not be of general interest, the technical descriptions of the fishes of each group are given in small type at the head of each chapter; and that they may be readily understood by the lay reader the following explanations seem necessary. The length of the head is from the point of the snout to the hindmost point or margin of the gill-cover. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
