About The Book "Barchester Towers" shares with "The Warden" the distinction of containing Trollope's most original, freshest, and best work, and in the character of Mr. Proudie a new specimen was added to English fiction. It was written for the most part in pencil, while the author was travelling about the country prosecuting his duties as a Post-office Surveyor, what was done being afterwards copied by the novelist's wife. The Barchester of the story has been identified as Winchester, and scattered at random throughout the work are many references to the neighbourhood of Hampshire's ancient capital. After the death of Bishop Grantly of Barchester, there is much conjecture as to his successor. Bishop Grantly's son, the archdeacon, is ambitious for the position, but his hopes are defeated when Dr. Proudie is appointed to the diocese. Bishop Proudie's wife is of Low Church propensities as well as being a woman of extremely aggressive nature, who keeps the bishop's chaplain, Obadiah Slope, in constant tow. On the first Sunday of the new bishop's regime, Mr. Slope preaches in the cathedral. His sermon concerns the importance of simplicity in the service and the consequent omission of chanting, intoning, and formal ritual. The cathedral chapter is aghast. For generations, the services in the cathedral were chanted; the chapter can see no reason for discontinuing the practice. In counsel, it is decreed that Mr. Slope never be permitted to preach from the cathedral pulpit again

Barchester Towers, published in 1857 by Anthony Trollope, is the second novel in the 'Chronicles of Barsetshire' series of books. Barchester Towers concerns the leading clergy of the cathedral city of Barchester. The much loved bishop having died, all expectations are that his son, Archdeacon Grantly, will succeed him. Instead, owing to the passage of the power of patronage to a new Prime Minister, a newcomer, the far more Evangelical Bishop Proudie, gains the see. His wife, Mrs Proudie, exercises an undue influence over the new bishop, making herself as well as the bishop unpopular with most of the clergy of the diocese.

"Son of Secession is a challenge to our understanding of the historical origins of the Christian Reformed Church as well as the church today. Janet Sjaarda Sheeres has written a biography of Douwe Vander Werp, one of the key figures in the Netherlands Afscheiding of 1834 and a principal minister in the early development of the Christian Reformed Church. Credited with having founded ten congregations, Vander Werp was a man zealously committed to his understanding of God's Word and its implications for his life, even when it required the painful sacrifice of three secessions."--BOOK JACKET.
