Excerpt from Barbarian and Noble History has no period which makes a more vivid appeal to the young reader than the thousand years which we call the Middle Ages. The mediaeval world is just such a world as he would like to live in, where knights ride off on crusades, and kings wander out from their palaces in disguise, where heroes sail away to explore unknown seas, and gay cavaliers sally forth to tournament and joust. It requires no effort to interest boys and girls in this part of history. They turn to it with the enthusiasm with which they seize fairy tales and legends of chivalry and romance, and find in its reality a satisfying response to the desire for a true story. The child's interest being assured, the problem is to make this interest of use in the process of his education. The purpose of this series is to relate this fascinating and heroic past to the present by telling the stories from the point of view of the contribution of the Middle Ages to the world of to-day. The heroes gain a new importance and the stories a new meaning by this treatment. Who the "mediaeval builders" were may be seen by the titles of the following books which make up the series: "Barbarian and Noble," "Patriots and Tyrants," "Sea Kings and Explorers," "Kings and Common Folk," "Cavalier and Courtier," "Craftsman and Artist." "Father, I feel his f tid breath: The thick air reeks with the stench of death; My will is Thine. Thy will be done On Turk and Bulgar, Czech and Hun!" She understands. Where the dead headland flare Mocks sea and sand; Where death-lights shed their glare On No-Man's-Land. France takes her stand. Magnificently fair, The Flaming Brand Within her slender hand; Christ's lilies in her hair. "Daughter of Grief, thy House is sand! Thy towers are falling athwart the land. They've flayed the earth to its ribs of chalk And over its bones the spectres stalk!" "Father, I see my high spires reel; My breast is scarred by the Hun's hoofed heel. What was, shall be! Excerpt from Confessions of a Barbarian This book reveals America to herself by interpreting Europe. I stand in symbolic relation, so to speak, to both hemispheres. My twofold racial consciousness serving as a fulcrum, I am enabled to pry two worlds - Archimedes aspired to lift but one - out of the furrow of their mutual misconception. I have seen the soul of the subtle siren Europe. I have chronicled facts from her unwritten history, from the secret pages of diplomatic portfolios. From her have I also learned verities greater than facts. I may speak ex cathedra: infallibility I claim not. I have emulated not the labored minuteness of old school painters who, numbering each hair of the head, make themselves rivals of God, but the thumbnail sketches of Whistler and the chromatic riots of Boecklin. My book, though published serially in William Marion Reedy's brave weekly. The Mirror, is journalism only in the sense in which that term may also be applied to the Reisebilder of Heine. Excerpt from The British Barbarians: A Hill-Top Novel Which every reader of this book is requested to read before beginning the story. This is a Hill-top Novel. I dedicate it to all who have heart enough, brain enough, and soul enough to understand it. What do I mean by a Hill-top Novel? Well, of late we have been flooded with stories of evil tendencies: a Hill-top Novel is one which raises a protest in favour of purity. Excerpt from Ingomar, the Barbarian: A Play in Five Acts Perhaps there is no question asked oftener than "Who wrote 'Ingomar'?" To the English-speaking public the name of Maria Lovell, whose adaptation into English is the best-known version of this picturesque and popular play, is familiar enough, but the name of its German author seems practically unknown. "Der Sohn der Wildniss," as "Ingomar" was known in the original, was written by Eligius Francis Joseph, Baron von Munch-Bellinghausen, who was known to the literary world under his nom de plume, Friedrich Halm. He was born at Cracow, then a part of the Austrian dominion, in 1806, and his father held high office at court, being finally Counsellor of State under the Emperor Francis II. "Der Sohn der Wildniss" was not its author's first work, but had been preceded by half a dozen successes; it is, however, his best-known play, and has been done into Danish as well as English, and succeeded in Copenhagen as well as it did in Vienna, in London, and all over America. It was written in 1842, and the first English version of it was not the one which is so familiar to us today, but was a straight translation, made by William Henry Charlton, and called "The Son of the Wilderness." This translation Halm highly complimented; but Maria Lovell's adaptation was the one first used in London, where it was produced at the Drury Lane Theatre, in June, 1851, by James Anderson, who had just become the manager of that theatre, and who was the original Ingomar, with Miss Vandenhoff as the first Parthenia. The play was a great success, but did not save Anderson from financial disaster. The first Ingomar died on March 3, 1895. The play had its first production in this country in December, 1851, being brought out simultaneously at the Bowery and Broadway Theatres.
