Excerpt from Baptism; An Argument and a Reply The first edition of this little work was issued in 1880. Owing chiefly to an over pretentious title for which I was in no way responsible, the balance of the edition left unsold on my return from a years absence from Canada, was destroyed. A second edition was published in 1882, in reply to Mr. McKay's review of my first pamphlet. This edition has been exhausted. The present pamphlet contains the substance of the preceding one, with some points more fully elaborated and new ones added. Great care has been taken to verify every quotation and to guard every statement. As I seek both to reply to Mr. McKay and carry forward an argument for the Baptist view of the mode and subjects of baptism, the treatment is not as compact as could be wished. Special attention is called to the foot notes and addenda, as they deal with many of the charges and statements of the pamphlet to which mine is an answer. Where it is possible, the reader of this pamphlet should also read those to which I reply, so that he may consider both sides fairly. I can only add a hope that these pages may not be made the occasion for bitterness of feeling by any, but may be of service to the truth, and express a wish for the time to come when candid discussion of disputed points may cause no abatement of the warmth of that Christian fellowship which should exist between all who are followers of the same Lord. Excerpt from The Baptismal Reconciliation: With Fraternal Remarks on Dr. Halley's Reply and the Appendix Advocates for infant baptism plead the be fore-named Objects severally, the one against the other: this work is designed to explain how, in the church of Christ, the whole of them may be united in Obedience to his law. By assuming that infant baptism is right, these elements Of Christian truth and duty are brought into hostility with each other; and, by resigning that assumption, the way for their reconciliation is prepared. In this appeal to holy scripture, Dr. Halley claims, justly, more attention than any other Of the parties united with him: he will, therefore, kindly accept the fraternal explanations here given, on various points in his Reply to the Rev. C. Stovel and the Rev. Dr. Wardlaw but the principal argument Of these pages is affectionately submitted to the prayerful con sideration of all who love the Redeemer. Excerpt from Treatise on Baptism: Including a Refutation of the Arguments Advanced on the Same Subject by Rev. G. Burns, D. D., Late Minister of Saint Andrew's Church, Saint John, N. B In perusin the following pages, the reader will observe, that I have con ned m self as much as possible to the evi dence of scripture; and): except when necessity requ in replying to Dr. Burns on that question, have not led him into the maze of antiquity, My object has been to render im mersion evident as the only roper mode of baptism, and believers as the only proper subjects. In pursuing this plan with respect to the mode, I have endeavoured to ascertain the scriptural and real import of the verb baptize, and to support it with evidence as ample as this treatise would allow. Excerpt from Baptism in Its Mode and Subjects Considered: And the Arguments of Mr. Ewing and Dr. Wardlaw Refuted Mr. Carson has adduced one idea, that is entirely original, namely, that Baqrcrw is the word invariably used to signify to dip, or to dye, while Bocqrrngw is the word invariably used to signify to dip only, and this is the only word ever used to express the Gospel ordi nance in question. Such being the fact, ' our assur ance is doubly sure, that we are on the side of truth. The popping system, which is exposed in this work, will, without doubt, be considered both novel and di verting. But oh, what deep-felt pity should possess our minds, at the thought that such good, and emi nent men, as Ewing, and Wardlaw, could be capable of fathering such figments of the imagination. There are a few slight alterations, in no way affect ng the argument or sense, which we presume every judicious reader, on comparison, would sanction in an American edition. If the circulation of this Work should be as useful and extensive as he anticipates, it will in some good degree alleviate the unhappiness which results from an inability to serve his'blessed Master in the public ministry of the Everlasting Gospel.
