Near the end of World War II, in an attempt to attack the United States mainland, Japan launched its fu-go campaign, deploying thousands of high-altitude hydrogen balloons armed with incendiary and high-explosive bombs designed to follow the westerly winds of the upper atmosphere and drift to the west coast of North America. After reaching the mainland, these fu-go, the Japanese hoped, would terrorize American citizens and ignite devastating forest fires across the western states, ultimately causing the United States to divert wartime resources to deal with the domestic crisis. While the fu-go offensive proved to be a complete tactical failure, six Americans lost their lives when a discovered balloon exploded. Ross Coen provides a fascinating look into the obscure history of the fu-go campaign, from the Japanese schoolgirls who manufactured the balloons by hand to the generals in the U.S. War Department who developed defense procedures. The book delves into panic, propaganda, and media censorship in wartime. Fu-go is a compelling story of a little-known episode in our national history that unfolded virtually unseen.

Download Analysis of Japanese Balloon Bombing of North America Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This paper provides a review and analysis of the Japanese balloon bombing of the U.S. during World War II. Areas covered include an examination of Japanese technological capabilities, a description of the two types of balloons, public and military response in the U.S., and the associated Japanese propaganda program. In today's world where acts of terrorism are not only increasing, but are a way of life in many Third World countries, the most important lesson to be learned from the Japanese balloon bombings of World War II is concerning voluntary media restraint. Terrorism thrives on media coverage and without it, might cease to exist. Because the balloon bombings of the United States were not publicized, the Japanese high command assumed the program was unsuccessful and discontinued it. Perhaps the American media should consider a similar approach in an effort to help combat terrorism.

Approximately three million Japanese died in a conflict that raged for years over much of the globe, from Hawaii to India, Alaska to Australia, causing death and suffering to untold millions in China, southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, as well as pain and anguish to families of soldiers and civilians around the world. Yet how much do we know of Japan's war?In a sweeping panorama, Haruko Taya and Theodore Cook take us from the Japanese attacks on China in the 1930s to the Japanese home front during the devastating raids on Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, offering the first glimpses of how this violent conflict affected the lives of ordinary Japanese people.'Oral History of a compellingly high order.' Kirkus Reviews'This book seeks out the true feelings of the wartime generation [and] illuminates the contradictions between official views of the war and living testimony.' Yomiuri Shimbun
