Excerpt from Bahama Bill: Mate of the Wrecking Sloop Sea-Horse The brig lay in four fathoms of water on the edge of the Great Bahama Bank. She had been a solid little vessel, built for the fruit trade, and she was about two hundred tons register. Her master had tried to sight the "Isaacs," but owing to the darkness and the drift of the Gulf Stream, he had miscalculated his distance in trying for the New Providence channel. A "nigger-head," a sharp, projecting point of coral, had poked a hole about four feet in diameter through her bottom, and she had gone down before they could run her into the shoal water on the bank. Down to the graveyard of good ships, Key West, the message was hurried, and the wreckers of Florida Reef heard the news. A heavily built sloop of thirty tons, manned by ten Spongers and Conchs, started up the Florida channel and arrived upon the scene two days later. The scene of Captain Hains' new sea story is laid in the region of the Florida Keys. His hero, the giant mate of the wrecking sloop, Sea-Horse, will arouse interest and admiration in readers who appreciate bravery and daring. His adventures while plying the desperate trade are full of the danger that holds one at a sharp tension, and the reader forgets to be on the side of law and order in his eagerness to see the 'wrecker' safely through his exciting escapades. Captain Hains' descriptions of life at sea are vivid, absorbingly frank and remarkably true. "Bahama Bill" ranks high as a stirring, realistic, unsoftened and undiluted tale of the sea, chock full of engrossing interest. "As for Bahama Bill, the reader will like him whether he will or no; he dominates the book, unscrupulous though he may be. Nevertheless there is not a mean streak in him. We shall be tempted to read 'Bahama Bill' several times." -Springfield Union "Captain Hains presents, in his latest book, a group of intense stories of the seas and ports of South Florida. He reveals a state of affairs that makes an honest citizen shiver and yet is all too true. The unique native honesty and courage of...Bahama Bill, makes the reader admire him while he holds his tense interest from cover to cover." -The Westminster "A wild story of the sea." -The American Stationer "Mr. Hains has done much to amuse and entertain those who like rollicking tales of the deep." -Boston Transcript "Racy, tropical, saturated with the sea." -Milwaukee Free Press "A book which will appeal to all men who admire bravery and courage." -Chicago Herald "As a thoroughly fresh and invigorating sea yarn, 'Bahama Bill' is one of the best." -Philadelphia Press "Captain Hains' descriptions of life at sea are vivid, absorbingly frank, and remarkably true. 'Bahama Bill' ranks high as a stirring, realistic, unsoftened, and undiluted tale of the sea, chock full of engrossing interest." -Boston Herald "A sea story, the scene of which is laid in the region of the Florida Keys. The hero, the giant mate of the wrecking sloop Sea-Horse, is brave and daring, and in carrying on his desperate trade has many stirring adventures." -The Bookman

This fiction presents an exciting sea story circling the Bahama Bill, a sailor and a mate of Sea-Horse by the coral roadway in Key-west. Penned by American sea novelist Thornton Jenkins Hains, this work contains all the fascinating elements of nautical fiction focusing on the human relationship to the sea, sea voyages, and the bizarre creatures of the sea. The dominant themes of masculinity prevail throughout the novel. Hains was a frequent contributor to the 1920s pulp magazine Sea Stories, under his name and his pseudonym under Garnett. Excerpt from Bahama Bill, Mate of the Wrecking Sloop Sea-Horse: "The day was well advanced when the spars of the brig showed above the sea. The sky was cloudless, and the little air there was stirring scarcely rippled the ocean; the swell rolling with that long, undulating sweep and peculiar slowness which characterizes calm weather in the Gulf Stream."
