The PEP-II B-Factory at SLAC (3.1 GeV e x 9.0 GeV e−) operated from 1999 to 2008, delivering luminosity to the BaBar experiment. The design luminosity was reached after one and a half years of operation. In the end PEP-II surpassed by four times its design luminosity reaching 1.21 x 1034 cm−2 s−1. It also set stored beam current records of 2.1 A e− and 3.2 A e+. Continuous injection was implemented with BaBar taking data. The total delivered luminosity to the BaBar detector was 557.4 fb−1 spanning five upsilon resonances. PEP-II was constructed by SLAC, LBNL, and LLNL with help from BINP, IHEP, the BaBar collaboration, and the US DOE OHEP.

The PEP-II B Factory at SLAC has been in operation with the BABAR detector since the summer of 1999. The peak currents and luminosity steadily increased through the end of the 2000 run on October 31. By that time, 0.75 A of electrons (the design current) routinely collided with 1.4 A of positrons in 657 bunches, to give a peak luminosity of 2.6 x 10[sup 33] cm[sup -2] s[sup -1]. We delivered an integrated luminosity of up to 184 pb[sup -1] per day and 1033 per week; BABAR logged a total of 25 fb[sup -1]. Three days of machine development at the end of the run raised the peak luminosity to 3.29 x 10[sup 33], exceeding the design goal of 3.0. BABAR then logged data for an hour, starting with a peak of 3.20. Next, we achieved the design value for positron current, 2.14 A, operating without collisions. The major limitation has been growth in the size of the positron beam in the low-energy ring (LER) due to electron clouds and multipacting. Since the arcs benefit from antechambers and a TiN coating with low secondary emission, our efforts have concentrated on the straights, where we added solenoid windings. Each straight wound allowed higher LER current without blow-up, and a consequent increase in luminosity. Measurements of the bunch-by-bunch luminosity showed that the effect becomes significant by about the tenth bunch in a train, but clears after a short gap. Careful control of the fill pattern has thus been essential in raising luminosity. For the 2001 run, which began in February, we added a third LER RF station, to collide with more LER current and more bunches, and also tried reducing[beta]*[sub x] from 50 to 35 cm, with the goal of reaching a luminosity of 5 x 10[sup 33] by year's end. In 2003, we plan to add a fourth LER and sixth HER RF station to reach 1 x 10[sup 34].

At high luminosity, bottom, charm and ? factories, synchrotron radiation and lost particles due to beam-gas interaction cause huge backgrounds to detectors, posing problems in trigger rates, radiation damage and efficiency. Studies of such effects have been made and are reported in this book.

The International Conference on Calorimetry in Particle Physics is the major forum for the state-of-the-art developments of calorimetry technologies. The Tenth Conference was attended by more than 150 physicists from 16 countries and covered all aspects of calorimetric particle detection and measurements, with emphasis on high energy physics and astrophysics experiments. The proceedings contain three parts: introductory papers, contributed papers and perspective papers. The introduction starts with a historical review of calorimetry developments, and continues with overviews of the current status of calorimetry in high energy physics and astrophysics, which are followed by discussions on calorimetry in future accelerator facilities, such as linear colliders and the Super B factories. A “hot” technology regarding the “energy flow concept” is also discussed. The contributed papers are organized in 11 sessions. The perspective papers summarize the physics and limitation of calorimeter applications in high energy physics, astrophysics and medical industries.

A new detector for investigating the CP violation mechanism in the B meson system is being built and is scheduled to take data at PEP II, the asymmetric B Factory in construction at SLAC, at the end of this century. Its main characteristics are briefly overviewed in this paper. Its sensitivity for measuring CP violation in some selected B decays is also discussed, underlining the great potential of this detector to accomplish a comprehensive study of this phenomenon.

To improve the understanding of accelerator-induced backgrounds at the SLAC B-Factory, we simulate lost particle backgrounds in the BABAR detector originating from beam-gas interactions and radiative Bhabha scatters. We have extended the GEANT4-based BABAR detector simulation to include beam-line components and magnetic fields up to 8.5 m away from the interaction point. We describe the simulation model and then compare preliminary predicted background levels with measurements from dedicated single- and colliding-beam experiments.

The BABAR detector, situated at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric e[sup+]e[sup -] collider, has been recording data at energies on and around the[Upsilon](4S) resonance since May 1999. In this paper, we briefly describe the PEP-II B Factory and the BABAR detector. The performance presently achieved by the experiment in the areas of tracking, vertexing, calorimetry and particle identification is reviewed. Analysis concepts that are used in the various papers submitted to this conference are also discussed.
