In March 2009, the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) was briefly taken over by a Christian faction. Their coup was overturned within a matter of weeks, but the episode highlighted a variety of issues, including the role of religion in civil society, sex education, homosexuality, state intervention and media engagement. Although the immediate issue was control of an activist group concerned with women's rights, it has implications for the agendas and concerns of NGOs, 'culture wars', the processes of citizenry mobilization, mass participation and noisy democracy, and liberal voices in contemporary Singapore. In this book, academics and public intellectuals examine the AWARE saga within the context of Singapore's civil society, considering the political and historical background and how the issues it raised relate to contemporary societal trends. In addition to documenting a milestone event for Singapore's civil society, the authors offer provocative interpretations that will interest a broad range of readers.

Life is surprising- it's a bit like traveling through a deep, impenetrable forest where you can hardly see in front of your nose. Then, as you come round a bend, you suddenly see a mesmerizing landscape spread out before you. What's really interesting though, is that to see this vision you have to have first navigated through the dark forest with its never-ending series of twists and turns. I'm now at a point in my life where I've just gone round a particularly sharp bend and the forest has suddenly opened up into this incredible space which seems to go on forever. And I'm struck by how impossible it would have been for me to even imagine what it could be like. It feels like the endless, luminous space is saturated with the beauty of the Universe, and I can feel the clean air of freedom filling my lungs. I'm still at the bend, absorbing it all. I'm transfixed as I contemplate the mesmerizing landscape. This short book is the result of that first moment of awe. It's about wanting to share the meaning of a journey that has brought me to this point, and to try to shed light on the elusive yet incredibly simple explanation for this wonderful discovery. As with all my books, I sincerely hope that this one is able to transmit this unearthed treasure to others - to confirm that such intense clarity does exist, and that it fills your heart with an intense sense of freedom. The boost I wish to offer to your personal development goes beyond the intellectual. Its main goal is to enable release from suffering, because pain dissolves when it is understood deeply. May those joining me on this journey feel inspired and encouraged, and may it help all men and women feel the liberation of understanding blossom inside them.

Aware By: SFC JW Dole Ret. About the Book Somewhere near the Arctic Circle a young Special Forces soldier works at passing his Arctic Survival course, but fate has a different idea. A nine hundred-pound, man killing brown bear, attacks him with the intent of eating another human, something the bear has developed a taste for. Through luck, skill and tenacity Jake Snow manages to kill the bear; but is terribly injured in the process. His shooting arm no longer has the strength to use the Sniper rifle he used to be so good with. Agreeing to travel back to Alaska the following summer with the daughter of one of the men that had rescued him, Jake falls in love for the first time in his life. On the way home, they are hijacked on the coastal ferry. Again, he feels it is luck but later realizes that it is God's will and he comes out of it alive, although his days as a Special Operations Soldier are now limited. He has been a winner too many times in a fashion much too publicized. He is re-assigned to a small Fort in southern Arizona. Many forces are at work in his life and some he knows about but most he does not. Jake’s girlfriend is going to school in Phoenix and after a serious blowup, because he is not a Christian and seemingly doesn’t want to be one, he starts attending the small base chapel in desperation, of which the Chaplin is a double amputee. Realizing that maybe he doesn’t have it so tough after all, he starts working with a renewed sense of purpose and tries to understand the Bible. The evening he finally understands the plan of salvation and accepts Christ, is the same night that his girl is kidnapped by a sick psychopath that is bent on murder and revenge. So, will he ever see her again? Few times in life does it turn out right and they ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after. Maybe in the movies, but rarely in in real life.
