Designates a class of flowering and ornamental-leaved plants in their dormant condition, the flowers, foliage and roots having completed their growth. Ripened on and died away, leaving a thickened. fleshy, bulbous root, tuber, corm, rhizome or pip. As the various types of bulbs are botanically named. But in all of which there were formed after flowering and before maturity, a bud or buds containing new sets of flowers. Stems. Leaves, etc which are protected and sustained within the succulent bulb by the reserve food and energy collected and stored therein by the plant before ripeningforits successors' requirements during the next growing and flowering period. It is during this dormant state of rest, lasting, approximately, for from three to six months, that bulbs are taken out of the ground - sold, shipped and repl'anted. Like so many potatoes after which, conditions being congenial. The incipient plant and flowers develop with as much perfection as if the bulb had remained in its original environment. Excerpt from Rawson's Autumn Catalogue of Bulbs, Seeds, Plants, Etc., Etc., 1905 The pot culture is the same as with Hyacinths, with the exception that from 8 to 12 bulbs should be planted in one pan in order to produce the proper effect. Pit-storage instead of cold cellar after being potted is preferable A pit should be dug 3 feet deep, 3 feet wide. And as long as is necessary to hold the amount of pots. Fill bottom of pit with a layer of 6 inches of coal ashes, place filled pots or pans upon ashes and cover with the same material for another 6 inches, fill in balance of pit with soil and cover surface with a good heap of manure. While the bulbs will be perfectly cold and in their natural home, they will not freeze if sufficient manure is used on sur face. They can be removed from there any day dur ing the winter. 10 to 12 weeks being necessary to root them well.
