This volume highlights some of the multidisciplinary aspects of automatic signature verification. The first two chapters serve as an introduction. The first constitutes a review of the literature of the past five years. The second addresses the problem of parallel strategies to construct and optimize feature vectors to describe a signature. The remaining six chapters are divided into two sections: research on static systems and research on dynamic systems. The section on off-line systems describes a system, based on cooperative neural networks for the automatic processing of signatures on checks, for background removal as well as a model-based system that segments the signature into elements which are then processed locally and globally to evaluate the similarity between two specimens. The three papers on on-line systems compare three verification methods, based on statistical models of signature features using the same benchmark, describe a step-wise verification method based on the analysis of the signature components and describe the different design phases of an operational system, focusing on the various decisions that have to be made throughout the development of such a prototype.

In the age of e-society, handwritten signature processing is an enabling technology in a multitude of fields in the “digital agenda” of many countries, ranging from e-health to e-commerce, from e-government to e-justice, from e-democracy to e-banking, and smart cities. Handwritten signatures are very complex signs; they are the result of an elaborate process that depends on the psychophysical state of the signer and the conditions under which the signature apposition process occurs. Notwithstanding, recent efforts from academies and industries now make possible the integration of signature-based technologies into other standard equipment to form complete solutions that are able to support the security requirements of today's society.Advances in Digital Handwritten Signature Processing primarily provides an update on the most fascinating and valuable researches in the multifaceted field of handwritten signature analysis and processing. The chapters within also introduce and discuss critical aspects and precious opportunities related to the use of this technology, as well as highlight fundamental theoretical and applicative aspects of the field. This book contains papers by well-recognized and active researchers and scientists, as well as by engineers and commercial managers working for large international companies in the field of signature-based systems for a wide range of applications and for the development of e-society.This publication is devoted to both researchers and experts active in the field of biometrics and handwriting forensics, as well as professionals involved in the development of signature-based solutions for advanced applications in medicine, finance, commerce, banking, public and private administrations, etc. Handwritten Signature Processing may also be used as an advanced textbook by graduate students.

Document image analysis is the automatic computer interpretation of images of printed and handwritten documents, including text, drawings, maps, music scores, etc. Research in this field supports a rapidly growing international industry. This is the first book to offer a broad selection of state-of-the-art research papers, including authoritative critical surveys of the literature, and parallel studies of the architectureof complete high-performance printed-document reading systems. A unique feature is the extended section on music notation, an ideal vehicle for international sharing of basic research. Also, the collection includes important new work on line drawings, handwriting, character and symbol recognition, and basic methodological issues. The IAPR 1990 Workshop on Syntactic and Structural Pattern Recognition is summarized, including the reports of its expert working groups, whose debates provide a fascinating perspective on the field. The book is an excellent text for a first-year graduate seminar in document image analysis, and is likely to remain a standard reference in the field for years.

For many years researchers in the field of Handwriting Recognition were considered to be working in an area of minor importance in Pattern Recog nition. They had only the possibility to present the results of their research at general conferences such as the ICPR or publish their papers in journals such as some of the IEEE series or PR, together with many other papers generally oriented to the more promising areas of Pattern Recognition. The series of International Workshops on Frontiers in Handwriting Recog nition and International Conferences on Document Analysis and Recognition together with some special issues of several journals are now fulfilling the expectations of many researchers who have been attracted to this area and are involving many academic institutions and industrial companies. But in order to facilitate the introduction of young researchers into the field and give them both theoretically and practically powerful tools, it is now time that some high level teaching schools in handwriting recognition be held, also in order to unite the foundations of the field. Therefore it was my pleasure to organize the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Fundamentals in Handwriting Recognition that had its origin in many exchanges among the most important specialists in the field, during the International Workshops on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition.

A new online handwritten signature verification system that employs both shape and dynamic features is presented in this work. The main design objective of the system is to obtain a balance of the trade-off between the system's accuracy and practicality. After acquiring the signature sequence using a tablet device, the acquired raw signature sequence is then preprocessed to prepare the sequence for normalization purposes. Next, the preprocessed signature sequence is divided into a number of smaller segments based on a novel scheme developed in this work, which uses the minimum velocity points of the signature sequence as segmentation boundaries. Each of the uniformly spatial-spaced signature segment is treated as a two element vector sequence (x,y,), and modeled by a multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) model. A one-dimensional autoregressive AR model is also used to model the velocity signal of the signature sequence after smoothing the sequence by applying a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) low pass filter. The extracted shape features are the MVAR coefficients from the pen position information of each segment; and the extracted dynamic features are the AR coefficients from the smoothed velocity signal of the signature sequence in addition to the total execution time of the signature. The extracted features vector is reprocessed by a newly developed Features Consistency Filter, a statistically based mathematical algorithm that weights the extracted features, keeps the most consistent features, and eliminates the inconsistent ones. The filtered extracted features are used together to train a Multi-Layer Perception (MLP) Neural Network. A performance evaluation of the system on the development signature database showed system accuracy of 99.8% in a Random Forgery Test (RFT), 98.8% in a Casual Forgery Test (CFT) and 98.63% in a Skilled Forgery Test (SFT). The dissertation also addresses the implementation of a practical system in terms of designing the system to be trained with fewer samples, proposing overall architecture for the practical implementation, and presenting a real time demonstration setup of the system.
