Excerpt from Australian Life: Black and White Fast steamboats and new mail routes have brought the Australian colonies into comparatively intimate relations with the mother-land; and in these days of "globe trotting," when every fifth man one meets has "gone round the world," it is usual enough to find that the tour has comprised visits to the Australian capitals and perhaps a little mild roughing it on some cattle or sheep station within easy distance of rail or high road. Excerpt from John Webb's End: Australian Bush Life The officer in command of the detachment was an acquaintance, stood on the outskirts, watching with a certain interest. Presently passers-by and street-loafers, coming up stragglingly, more or less surrounded him. The detachment went bending round a corner a little way off, and then the last man disappeared. The gentleman turned to one side rather quickly with a smile and an exclamation to himself, and felt a tug at his fob. He at once looked down, at the same time receiving from behind a shove that threw him up against a man who was standing in front of him. In a moment it flashed across the gentleman's mind that he had been robbed, and his one idea was to see and catch the robber He recovered himself and turned round sharply. A few yards from him he saw moving quickly away out of the slowly dispersing crowd, a tall man With broad sloping shoulders and a slouch hat. Excerpt from Australian Life I was walking along George Street, Brisbane, last Monday in the afternoon when I suddenly ran upon my friend Power. Power is a man worth knowing. I suppose no one has been along the Australian coast, from Perth to Port Darwin, more Often than he has. Is there a little port-town all round that he has not been in? Is there a river, navi gable or unnavigable, that finds its way into Australian seas. That he has not floated on? His stock Of tales is the largest and best Of anyone I know, and he has a sort of humorous kindliness about him, a genuine humanistic tolerance and appreciation, which has made him the friend of all sorts and conditions of men, women, and animals. He has the unctuous pleasure of discovering and understanding every oddity, and the light of this pleasure beams up in his eyes and on his lips and in his whole face as he sits Opposite some abnormal piece of humanity in a cosy corner, just as when he pauses from his submarine work in his diver's dress to observe the antics Of some eccentric denizen of the deep. Excerpt from Old Time Australian Life This matron's sister was nurse in charge Of the Melbourne hospital, and, on receiving her sister's letter about the girls, she laid the matter before the authorities, who promised to give assisted passages, and make all necessary enquiries before settling the girls at the various stations, and notice to the owners was sent out when the first batch of sixty young women were expected at Melbourne. All the ladies in great haste sent Off their brothers, husbands, and sons, to try at any cost to get a girl, and Mr Andrews had written to see if one of the four matrons in charge Of them would come to Nangwarry as housekeeper. He knew only two of them were emigrating, the others were Officials Of the school, and one lady, he had heard, had a son who was pretty sure to claim her. Town Life in Australia by Richard Ernest Nowell Twopeny A WALK ROUND MELBOURNE. Although most educated people know that Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide are populous towns, I should doubt whether one Englishman, who has not been to Australia, out of a hundred realizes that fact. I well remember that, although I had taken some trouble to read up information about Melbourne, I was never more thoroughly surprised than during the first few hours after my arrival there. And I hear almost everyone who comes out from England say that his experience has been the same as my own. In one sense the visitor is disappointed with his first day in an Australian city. The novelties and the differences from the Old Country do not strike him nearly so much as the resemblances. It is only as he gets to know the place better that he begins to to notice the differences. The first prevailing impression is that a slice of Liverpool has been bodily transplanted to the Antipodes, that you must have landed in England again by mistake, and it is only by degrees that you begin to see that the resemblance is more superficial than real. Although Sydney is the older town, Melbourne is justly entitled to be considered the metropolis of the Southern Hemisphere. The natural beauties of Sydney are worth coming all the way to Australia to see; while the situation of Melbourne is commonplace if not actually ugly; but it is in the Victorian city that the trade and capital, the business and pleasure of Australia chiefly centre. Excerpt from Under the Street Lamp: Vignettes of Australian Bush Life Much of the literature dealing with Australian bush life has represented, and for the most part, faithfully, the rougher, and it may be said the coarser and lower, elements in the charac ter of the back-blocks worker. But every one who knows the true Australian bushman knows that he has another side. Against the almost universal indulgence in drink, gambling, profanity, and general rowdyism, must be placed many noble characteristics. Excerpt from Australian Stories Retold and Sketches of Country Life Telegraph in Sydney, they have beguiled many weary hours of their author at a time of much anxiety for all those who, like himself, were interested in the great pas toral industry of the country. Iam no judge of their merits, if, indeed, they have any. The first person who suggested their collection in this form was the late Chief Justice, Sir James Martin, who was pleased to speak in terms somewhat too laudatory of them, and in his rapid manner said, You must put them in a book, you know - you must put them in a book. Well, here they are in a book. There is little or nothing imagina tive in the volume. The Stories Retold are chiefly gathered from the Press records of the day, and from the word of mouth of old colonial friends who have some recollection of the events narrated. The Sketches of Country Life are derived almost wholly from my own experiences. The descriptions of men and scenery are exactly set down as they appeared to me. So many wonderful changes have taken place in colonial society since I was young, that I venture to h0pe the book may not prove uninteresting to those who have not been eyewitnesses of those changes.
