Some people are scared of clowns. It's a real phobia. I read once that it's something about their smiles, the painted grins are just a little too wide and whatever it is in our heads that recognizes faces, gets twitchy. It isn't wired to see a smile, or a mouth that wide, without instantly thinking of teeth, seeing the threat of a mouth that wide as something with the potential to bite, or even to consume. Of course, that's ridiculous. Most of the time. I'm not scared of clowns. I've worked with enough of them, metaphorically at least, to have developed an immunity. The only literal clown I ever worked with wasn't frightening either, but the thing that scared him, the thing that clowns are scared of, well, that I am scared of too. It's the reason I no longer do what I did and why my hair stands on end at the tinkling sound of bells. Of course, there had always been strange ones. In my line of work you get to meet some truly...GET YOUR COPY TODAY!

In the early 1900s, the circus was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in America, and one of the most popular circus acts was the clown. White-faced clowns in bright costumes made adults and children laugh with their silly antics. When the Great Depression caused many Americans to lose their jobs, Emmett Kelly decided to be a different type of clown—a sad-faced clown who reminded people of their struggles, but still made them laugh. His clown character, Weary Willie, inspired people to keep going during hard times. Because his clown character made people laugh and helped them with their troubles, Emmett Kelly became the most famous clown in the world.

Groundbreaking. Tales from the Bloody Stump is an anthology of speculative fiction, all enclosed in a husk of humor--humor that is neither snide nor sarcastic. The book includes 15 stories of widely varying lengths, 5 poems, a book of fables (a book within a book), and a novelette. What a bargain! The collection can be described as surreal, with oddball characters and bizarre behavior. It is a mixture of fantasy, science fiction, abstract worlds, and improbable events and story lines. Each story or poem is unique and unlike any of the others. They are unpredictable, compelling, and easy to read. Oddly accessible oddness. The author, Graham Glass, provides an anthology (a book) that you can grab hold of and dive into. Select any story or poem and you will be transported into a space filled with imagination and humor that only a skilled author can provide. Any offering in Tales from the Bloody Stump can be read multiple times; each time something new may be waiting to be discovered. However, none of it should be taken too seriously. But be aware, once you read it you can't un-read it.

Wyl Menmuir’s The Draw of the Sea is a beautifully written and deeply moving portrait of the Cornish Coast and the people who make their livings there, examining the ephemeral but universal pull the sea holds over the human imagination. ‘A beautiful portrait of lives shaped by the swell of ocean and tide - a powerful salt-thread of connection’ - Raynor Winn, author of The Salt Path Since the earliest stages of human development, the sea has fascinated and entranced us. It feeds us, sustaining communities and providing livelihoods, but it also holds immense destructive power which can take all those away in an instant. It connects us to far away places, offering the promise of new lands and voyages of discovery, but also shapes our borders, carving divisions between landmasses and eroding the very ground beneath our feet. In this beautifully-written meditation on what it is that draws us to the waters' edge, author Wyl Menmuir tells the stories of the people whose lives revolve around the sea in the Cornish community where he lives. In twelve interlinked chapters, Menmuir explores the lives of local fishermen steeped in the rich traditions of a fishing community, the beachcombers who wander the shores in search of the varied objects which wash ashore and the stories they tell, and all number of others who have made their lives on the beautiful Cornwall coast. In the specifics of these livelihoods and their rich histories and traditions, Wyl Menmuir captures the universal human connection to the sea. Into this seductive tapestry, Wyl weaves the story of how the sea has beckoned, consoled and restored him. This book is a meaningful and moving work into how we interact with the environment around us, and how it comes to shape the course of our lives. As unmissable as it is compelling, as profound as it is personal, this must-read book will delight anyone familiar with the intimate and powerful pull which the sea holds over us.

Don't touch the clowns, and don't let the clowns touch you. Just off of highway 95 in the state of Nevada, there lies the small town of Tonopah. For miles around, it's desolate and in the silence, there lies one lonely motel. Across from the motel is an old cemetery where miners were buried. It's not the ghosts within the cemetery that will make you run in fear...for those of you faint of heart and fearful of clowns, this is not a delicate story. America's scariest motel is haunted...by hundreds of clowns. Spending the night in this creepy Motel is definitely a true test of courage, because it's full of clowns. There are clowns tacked onto the doors, shelves of clown dolls starring at you with their beady glass eyes, and collectibles in the lobby that are neatly seated in chairs as if guarding the place from harmful intruders. There are clown paintings on the walls that look at you. And if you have a second floor room, you can look out from the balcony and see why the motel is so eerily quiet and dark at night. It's the cemetery. The Clown Motel stands right next to Tonopah's old, dusty, unlit cemetery. Closed for over one hundred years, it's packed with the graves of the town's miners who died very unpleasantly. That should be cause for panic and even more so, if you've ever watched the movie Poltergeist, and you decide to spend a night at this unique lodge. Spend at least a minute or two wondering if, just maybe, part of a cemetery full of graves of men who died horrible deaths once stretched underneath land now occupied by the Clown Motel... I tell this story with locked doors and windows. I was one of the lucky ones. They are coming. They are coming for me. As the saying goes, you can check out any time you want, but you can't leave. There's a lot more buried there than you might think...
