We owe a great debt to Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797-1849) for his Atlas of Anatomy, which was not only a massive event in medical history, but also remains one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical treatises ever published. Bourgery began work on his magnificent atlas in 1830 in cooperation with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871), a student of the French painter Jacques Louis David. The first volumes were published the following year, but completion of the treatise required nearly two decades of dedication; Bourgery lived just long enough to finish his labor of love, but the last of the treatise's eight volumes was not published in its entirety until five years after his death. The eight volumes of Bourgery's treatise cover descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques (exploring in detail nearly all the major operations that were performed during the first half of the 19th century), general anatomy and embryology, and microscopic anatomy. Jacob's spectacular hand-colored, life-size lithographs are remarkable for their clarity, color, and aesthetic appeal, reflecting a combination of direct laboratory observation and illustrative research. Unsurpassed to this day, the images offer exceptional anatomical insight, not only for those in the medical field but also for artists, students, and anyone interested in the workings and wonder of the human body.--

Professor Walter Thiels brilliant photographs are unique. They revolutionise macroscopic surgery because - due to a new preservation technique developed by the author himself - all tissues retain their living colour, consistency and position. This new technique, Thiels exceptional abilities as a photographer and the filigree dissections add up to vivid, almost artistic illustrations of astonishing depth and clarity. Apart from the topographical anatomy of the abdomen and lower extremities, Part I illustrates the most important punctures of joints and many surgical approaches. Thus this atlas is not only of interest to anatomists and pathologists but particularly to surgeons and orthopaedic surgeons - in fact all doctors requiring a 3D presentation of human anatomy.

Lavishly illustrated with layered anatomical artwork, Atlas of Clinical and Surgical Orbital Anatomy, 3rd Edition, provides a rich visual resource for ophthalmic, oculoplastic, and other surgeons to fully understand relevant orbital anatomic structures as well as their clinical and surgical correlations. Under the expert authorship of Dr. Jonathan J. Dutton, this fully revised edition demonstrates complex structures through unique illustrations and comprehensive coverage from embryology through adult anatomy, helping clinicians enhance their diagnostic and surgical expertise. Features layered anatomical illustrations that use multiple sequential artworks to display relevant structures and highlight key intricacies, as well as sectional anatomic correlations with CT and MRI. This atlas demonstrates all components of the body through imaging, in much the same way that a geographical atlas demonstrates components of the world. Each body system and organ is imaged in every plane using all relevant modalities, allowing the reader to gain knowledge of density and signal intensity. Areas and methods not usually featured in imaging atlases are addressed, including the cranial nerve pathways, white matter tractography, and pediatric imaging. As the emphasis is very much on high-quality images with detailed labeling, there is no significant written component; however, ‘pearl boxes’ are scattered throughout the book to provide the reader with greater insight. This atlas will be an invaluable aid to students and clinicians with a radiological image in hand, as it will enable them to look up an exact replica and identify the anatomical components. The message to the reader is: Choose an organ, read the ‘map,’ and enjoy the journey!
