Excerpt from Atlanta Medical and Surgical Journal, 1856, Vol. 1 It is difficult to find a period at which quackery in medicine may be said to have had a commencement. Human nature, since the tall, has been corrupt; and man has continually, from that period, been disposed to seek out, many devices by which to avoid the fulfilment of the Divine decree, that, By the sweat of the brow man should live. And in no age of the world have there been wanting 111dividuals, too scrupulous, to take advantage of opportunities for realizing a subsistence without being very particular to enquire as to the legitimacy of the means; in none of the departments of active life has this dis position been more decidedly manifested than in ourown calling. Nvhile from the earliest times, there have been individuals who have pursued the investigation of disease with honest and phil anthmpic purposes, a large number have always been found looking alone to the accumulation of wealth and attainment of position, by practising upon the ignorance and credulity of the world. The fondness for mystwy upon the part of the votaries of medicine, and the willingness upon the' part of the world to be deceived, perhaps, commenced with Esculapius (to whom was ascribed the power of raising the dead, and who was worshipped as the God of Medicine) and has descended in no small degree down to our own times. If, the temples which the ancients were wont to raise to him, and in which votive tablets were hung up, on which were recorded the diseases cured, as they imagined, by his assistance, are no longer erected to our modern Gods, they are able, at least, to record their own deeds, and to raise temples and palaces for themselves from the rich otter. Ings which flow from a perpetuation of the same credulity and ignorance, and doubtless, in this age of the world, can divini tics prefer the wealth and luxury heaped upon them to all the honors which the ancients awarded to aesculapius. Excerpt from Atlanta Medical and Surgical Journal, 1858, Vol. 3 My attention has recently been called to an editorial notice in the Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery, for August, 1857, of the Lecture delivered by me, on the subject of the Use and Abuse of Tobacco, at the Opening of the present course of Lectures in the Atlanta Medical College, in which, while the writer shrinks from being understood as defend ing the use of Tobacco, or as being the apologist of those who do use it, he disingenuously seeks to cast opprobrium upon the Lecture, and parry its force, by reference to a former dis cussien, in which he had taken the very position here disclaim ed, and in the defence of which he had introduced to his Med ical Class an old African slave, for the purpose of invoking his experience and opinion. Excerpt from Atlanta Medical and Surgical Journal, 1898, Vol. 15 Now with these important symptoms we have a change in the pulse; we have the pulse Of peritonitis; it may not be increased much in rapidity, but its character is changed in a marked degree. And just here I would say that it is not the rapidity of the pulse upon which we lay stress, but upon the character ofthe pulse itself. We find the pulse hard, bounding, throbbing as it were, and one that it is impossible to compress or to make entirely disappear. We feel it jumping under the fingers as an unruly horse pulling against the bridle. The pulse rate may be very little increased, or it may run up very rapidly. Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, 1856, Vol. 54 Under these circumstances laryngotomy was decided upon, and performed by Dr. Draper, the House Physician, who had her in charge. The relief was instantaneous - the patient breathed freely and without any cough, and fell into a calm sleep. Within three hours the uterus resumed its action, and a dead child was expelled. The uterus contracted firmly, and there was no hemorrhage. Until midnight everything promised well. Then her pulse, which had been reduced by the operation from 150 to 120, 'began to grow weaker and more rapid; the respiration continued free, but grew. More frequent. Stimulation was in vain. She died on the morn. Ing of the 11th inst., a little more than twelve hours after the operation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Southern Medical and Surgical Journal, 1856, Vol. 12 The subject of the present case is a daughter of Mr. B., of Li thonia, in this State: she was born in March 1851, and in Novem ber 1853 was attacked with Erysipelas, with which she was very ill, and remained feeble for some length of time. I am informed that she had no spasmodic affection during or subsequently to her illness; but it was observed, when she began to run about again, that she was lame. This lameness gradually increasing, its cause was observed to be in the foot, whose distortion grew more and more obvious until I saw her, in August, 1854. The case then presented all the peculiarities of a well-marked Talipes varus, the weight of the body resting upon the external margin of the foot; one only being effected.
