Excerpt from At the West Bend of Uwharrie Road, 1909-1984: A 75th Anniversary History of West Bend United Methodist Church, Albemarle Road, Asheboro, North Carolina This history has long been in the making, in the mind at least. I started collecting pictures and information from some who knew the beginning. Some wanted a small pam phlet. I feel like the more complete a history we have now, the more we hand to those who come after us. In 100 years there will be no one around to ask questions of. This has been a labor of joy for the most part. Also at times I have felt like giving up. I don't claim to be the best but I have tried to tell things as they are set down or the account I find most reliable. My two fellow workers are Billie Nance and Charlie Robbins, Jr. I wish to thank them for the help and support they have given me. Treva Davidson has given or loaned some of her most precious pictures. Diann Davis was a tremendous help in searching the First Methodist records. Some of the printers who have donated negatives and helped me in other ways are Austin Printing of Thomasville, Asheboro Printing, and Village Printing. The book is being printed by Randleman Printing Company of Randleman. The line etching on the front was drawn by Debi Setzer when she was Debbie Burrows. She has probably forgotten it. I have tried to give the most pertinent and interesting notes. I know there are some that I have missed. I just hope the ones I have included will make this history worth having in your homes. If this history is not what you hoped for, I'm sorry and take all the blame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. North Carolina's written history begins in the sixteenth century with the voyages of Sir Walter Raleigh and the founding of the ill-fated Lost Colony on Roanoke Island. But there is a deeper, unwritten past that predates the state's recorded history. The region we now know as North Carolina was settled more than 10,000 years ago, but because early inhabitants left no written record, their story must be painstakingly reconstructed from the fragmentary and fragile archaeological record they left behind. Time before History is the first comprehensive account of the archaeology of North Carolina. Weaving together a wealth of information gleaned from archaeological excavations and surveys carried out across the state--from the mountains to the coast--it presents a fascinating, readable narrative of the state's native past across a vast sweep of time, from the Paleo-Indian period, when the first immigrants to North America crossed a land bridge that spanned the Bering Strait, through the arrival of European traders and settlers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Forgotten Grasslands of the South is the study of one of the biologically richest and most endangered ecosystems in North America. In a seamless blend of science and personal observation, renowned ecologist Reed Noss explains the natural history of southern grasslands, their origin and history, and the physical determinants of grassland distribution, including ecology, soils, landform, and hydrology. In addition to offering fascinating new information about these little-studied ecosystems, Noss demonstrates how natural history is central to the practice of conservation. Although theory and experimentation have recently dominated the field of ecology, ecologists are coming to realize how these distinct approaches are not divergent but complementary, and that pursuing them together can bring greater knowledge and understanding of how the natural world works and how we can best conserve it. This long-awaited work sets a new standard for scientific literature and is essential reading for those who study and work to conserve the grasslands of the South as well as for everyone who is fascinated by the natural world.

Since arriving nearly 250 years ago in Franklin County, Virginia, German Baptists have maintained their faith and farms by relying on their tightly knit community for spiritual and economic support. Today, with their land and livelihoods threatened by the encroachment of neighboring communities, the construction of a new highway, and competition from corporate megafarms, the German Baptists find themselves forced to adjust. Charles D. Thompson Jr.'s The Old German Baptist Brethren combines oral history with ethnography and archival research--as well as his own family ties to the Franklin County community--to tell the story of the Brethren's faith on the cusp of impending change. The book traces the transformation of their operations from frontier subsistence farms to cash-based enterprises, connecting this with the wider confluence of agriculture and faith in colonial America. Using extensive interviews, Thompson looks behind the scenes at how individuals interpret their own futures in farming, their hope for their faith, and how the failure of religiously motivated agriculture figures in the larger story of the American farmer.
