Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Young Folks' AstronomyThe commendation which the astronomical articles in the Young Folks' Cyclopaedia of Com mon Things have received from parents and teachers has led to the preparation of this little volume, in the hope that it will fill a want long felt in homes and schools. There can be little question of the propriety of early grounding a child in an elementary knowledge of the astro nomical features of the earth on which he lives and of the universe of which it forms a part; yet it is almost impossible to find a text-book in which either the language or the ideas are within an ordinary child's comprehension, most of the books miscalled astronomy primers being fit ted only for those who already possess some knowledge of the science and of its correlated subjects. In the present work the topic is treated in the most elementary way, the child being first taught that the earth is a heavenly body which moves in the heavens in the same way as the moon, and which would look from the moon at night much as the moon looks to us.
