Excerpt from Assurance and Other Poems The poetry contained in this volume is the offspring of a mind of unusual vigor, and which had passed through unusual experiences. The writer felt her way, independently of human leading, into the Christian path, demanding a solid foundation for every step. Finding evidence of her regeneration only after she had attained adult age, her religion became the spring both of her thought and life. It was her habit of mind to question herself rigidly, and to be unsatisfied with any thing short of perfection in her experiences and in her work. This accounts for that peculiar characteristic of her poetry, - a perpetual reaching forward to the yet unattained, a yearning for the higher, a longing for the glory yet to be revealed. Excerpt from Moods and Other Verses My lady sleeps, and sleeps in sweetest peace; No stain of tear is on her restful face, While placid smiles do there each other chase, To give assurance of her pain's release. Her radiant head, that doth the pillow crease In such serene repose, I fain would kiss Till heart and soul were emptied of all bliss, And love itself gave thankfulness surcease. Excerpt from Something Beyond: And Other Poems; Recreations of a Busy Life Is it not an echo ringing _through the Spirit's weird halls, Echo of an invitation That from some far future falls? Echo Of a language wooing TO some fairer, better land, Where the soul enriched, enraptured, On some starry hight shall stand? Echo Of the blest assurance That as is the soul's desire Such shall be its full provision, Ever something more and higher? Not as an eagle fettered and caged And left to languish and die, While the piteous gleam of a heavenward Fades from its noble eye, But bearing enclosed in its deep recess A title affixed with power TO something beyond its highest thought, To an unencircled dower, The spirit Oi man can feast on hope, Can spread its airy wing And darting above the storm-tossed cloud, In its self-poised grandeur sing: Something beyond! My life 1s a day That knows no twilight' s muffled ray Something beyond! My heritage lies Away, away through the azure skies.
