Download Special Course on V/STOL Aerodynamics Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The aim of this course was to outline and discuss the additional knowledge of aerodynamics needed to embark on the design of V/STOL aircraft. The influence of V/STOL features on wing design, layout considerations, engine and air intake considerations, effects of jet effluxes, wind tunnel and flight testing, manoeuvrability and control, performance assessment and special aspects of flight aerodynamics were discussed by nine lecturers. Topics included: Some Jet Interference Phenomena Relevant to V/STOL Aircraft; Influence of V/STOL on Wing Tailplane Designs; Layout Considerations and Types of V/STOL Aircraft; V/ stol Propulsion System Aerodynamics; Jet Flowfields; V/STOL Maneuverability and Control; V/STOL Wind-tunnel Testing; Ground Based Testing without Wind Tunnels; Aerodynamics of V/STOL Aircraft - Performance assessment; Assessment of Aerodynamic Performance of V/STOL and STOVL Fighter Aircraft; Special Flight Aspects such as STO, Ski-jump and ODM.

Download A Study of Aerodynamic Performance Evaluation and Comparison Techniques for V/STOL Aircraft Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The report presents the results of an investigation of performance evaluation and comparison methods as applied to V/STOL aircraft. Attention is given to a number of aircraft having different sizes, gross weights, geometric configurations, and propulsion systems. Particular regard is given to the use of thermal fuel energy as a common basis for evaluation and comparison of V/STOL performance. The performance capabilities of typical V/STOL aircraft are presented and compared using both dimensional and nondimensional parameters containing fuel flow rate as a variable. In addition, three aircraft of different configurations are analyzed with regard to the effects of altitude, gross weight, and payload-to-fuel load ratio on the performance capability of each aircraft as indicated by both new and conventionally used methods. The total energy concept is discussed with regard to the optimization of climb schedules, and consideration is given to the limitations which apply to the use of nondimensional parameters which are used to describe the flow regimes of V/STOL aircraft. Download An Examination of Handling Qualities Criteria for V/STOL Aircraft Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A study has been undertaken to define hand-ling qualities criteria for V/STOL aircraft. With the current military requirements for helicopters and airplanes as a framework, modifications and additions were made for conversion to a preliminary set of V/STOL requirements using a broad background of flight experience and pilots' comments from VTOL and STOL aircraft, BLC (boundary-layer-control) equipped aircraft, variable stability aircraft, flight simulators and landing approach studies. The report contains a discussion of the reasoning behind and the sources of information leading to suggested requirements. The results of the study indicate that the majority of V/STOL requirements can be defined by modifications to the helicopter and/or airplane requirements by appropriate definition of reference speeds. Areas where a requirement is included but where the information is felt to be inadequate to establish a firm quantitative requirement include the following: Control power and damping relationships about all axes for various sizes and types of aircraft; control power, sensitivity, d-amping and response for height control; dynamic longitudinal and dynamic lateral- directional stability in the transition region, including emergency operation; hovering steadiness; acceleration and deceleration in transition; descent rates and flight-path angles in steep approaches, and thrust margin for approach.
